This position is part of Region 8, National Forests in North Carolina, located in Ashville, NC. As a fully functioning professional landscape architect, the primary purposes of this position include scenery management, landscape planning and design, interpretive planning, dispersed and developed recreation, special uses and scenic byways.
Duties
Serve on multidisciplinary teams to complete recreation, forest restoration and wilderness and wild and scenic river plans.
Review site analyses, recreation and scenic resource specialist reports to analyze design features, environmental design features and mitigation measures.
Perform duties to analyze proposed land management resource plan direction and natural resource management projects.
Work with architects, engineers and other staff to develop contract packages for recreation and administration facilities construction projects.
Participate or directs others to prepare master plans, design narratives, construction documents (drawings, specifications, estimates) and conceptual site development plans.

Basic Requirement: GS-0807:
A degree in landscape architecture or landscape design from an accredited college or university.
OR
A combination of education and experience - for each year short of graduation, 1 year of experience under professional leadership and guidance of such character and diversity as to be a satisfactory substitute for the required education. This experience must have included original landscape design.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-11 level: Applicants must have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled);
OR
one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level;
OR
An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education (beyond what is required for a master's degree, i.e., more than 36 semester hours leading to a Ph.D.).
Specialized experience includes meeting two or more of the following: assisting in the development of land management plans related to recreation, scenery and related resources. Reviewing and analyzing initial recreation project information. Assisting in designing recreational scenery using computer design technology such as AutoCAD, LandCADD, and Google SketchUp or similar.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
