This position serves as the Grounds and Transportation Front Line Supervisor for the Facilities Management Service at VA Detroit Healthcare System under the supervision of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor. The incumbent is required to work under minimal supervision and resolve problems associated with the work of the office. Incumbent has total responsibility for the Grounds and Transportation Unit and for the VA Detroit Fleet Management and is designated the VA Detroit Fleet Manager.
Duties
The major duties of the Motor Vehicle Operator Supervisor include, but are not limited to:
Supervise and manage employees and the work of the Transportation and Grounds Unit
Manage the Detroit VA Medical Center vehicle fleet
Informs subordinate employee weekly/monthly what projects need to be accomplished, as well as regular recurring seasonal planning and maintenance schedules
Develop overall landscape plan and provide approval on projects which require unplanned expenses or significant periods of time
Plan and maintain a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for grounds/landscaping
Submit work order, order supplies, order equipment, and repair parts need for the Transportation and Grounds Unit
Submit reports and manage records for all Fleet Management duties for the Detroit VA
Perform Supervisory duties to include time sheet certification, schedule leave, establish performance standards, conduct rating reviews, and counseling subordinate employees
Drive a variety of gasoline/diesel powered equipment. Including buses, forklifts, lawn mowers, skid steers, excavators, and utility vehicles
Perform maintenance work to include mowing grass, edge trimming, cleaning parking structures, snow removal, spreading salt/ice-melt, and cleaning debris from grounds
Propagate and cultivate a wide variety of plants, and perform a wide range of gardening work
Recommend plants for particular purposes for shade, boundary lines, ground cover, erosion control, or pleasing appearances
Apply watering of different varieties of plants, trees, and foliage. Perform trimming and pruning as required
Read and use blueprints, technical manuals, and Internet for the repair, and maintenance of the irrigation system and ground equipment
Ensures that all required safety training for motor vehicles are properly recorded and maintained
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00am-2:30pm

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Condition of Employment: Must maintain/or attain within 6 months a valid, unrestricted, Class B Commercial Driver License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements. Selectee will be required to provide Department of Motor Vehicle (or state equivalent) printout as part of the Employment Verifications.
Incumbent must possess a valid State Operator's Permit and must obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsement within 6 months of employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work requires good coordination as well as manual dexterity. Incumbent is required to bend, stoop, crawl, walk, climb and lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds. May be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways. Work is performed under various weather and road conditions, to operate snow plow and sand/salt spreader during icy and snowy conditions, and to run power tailgate on trucks in all kinds of weather conditions. Incumbent drives in heavy traffic and at high speeds over complicated road and interchange systems and may be exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises and burns.
