The Lead Medical Supply Technician Inventory Management Specialist- Sterile Processing is located within the Sterile Processing Service in the VA Northeast Ohio System in Cleveland, Ohio. The SPS MST Coordinator-Inventory Management Specialist works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team and in support of the Specialty Care - Nursing Service Management Team.

Duties of the Lead Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing include but are not limited to:
Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.
Incumbent, in coordination with Chief, SPS and Assistant Chief of SPS, acts as the medical facility subject matter expert for all surgical instrumentation.
Must display overall knowledge of sterilization policies and procedures both. within the VA and outside governing bodies such as AAMI, HSPA, ANSI, One Source and manufacturer's Instructions for Use (IFUs).
Monitors changes in instrument needs and maintains constant communication. with operating room managers, service leaders, clinic staff, vendors and VAMC staff to identify potential problems and to ensure continuous availability of required instruments
Assists in establishing an effective system of instrument control, distribution and tracking for instrument inventories for a variety of specialties.
Coordinates the procurement of surgical instrumentation through ordering services based on instrumentation manufacturer indications for use and SPS sterilization practices.
Maintains SPS Inventories, requests, processes, stores, and distributes all instruments received from a variety of sources including physicians, nurses, therapists and other clinical personnel for direct patient care and treatment.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, Day Shift- 6:30am-2:30pm

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience and/or Education.(1) Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or, (2) Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or,(3) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grandfathering Provision. All MSTs that are employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:
Employees grandfathered into the GS-622 occupational series as MSTs may be reassigned, promoted up to and including the full performance (journeyman) level, or changed to lower grade within the occupation.
MSTs who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard.
MSTs who are converted to title 38 hybrid status under this provision and subsequently leave the occupation lose protected status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry to the occupation.
Grade Determinations: GS-08 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7).
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Ability to read and interpret written procedures and select appropriate action in order to instruct staff in correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
Ability to communicate orally and in writing to ensure staff compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.
Preferred Experience:
Must meet the qualification requirements as stated in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G47, paragraph 2.
Computer knowledge with use of various software, VISTA, Instrument Tracking Systems and Word, Excel, and PPT.
Have knowledge of SPS Practices. At least 2 years SPS Experience

This position is being filled at the GS-8 grade level.
Physical Requirements: This work is performed in, and the Sterile Processing Service located in the medical facility/campus. The work requires proper body mechanics when standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages/instrumentation (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating of the various orders/trays of instrumentation.
On a regular and recurring basis, the employee alternates between areas of SPS. The employee wears specific facility laundered Scrub attire. The scrubs are provided to the employee per process of the EMS department. The hospital scrubs are not to worn outside of campus and cannot be laundered at home. Employee changes in and out of scrubs when coming and going from tour of duty. The work area is noisy due to the clatter of metal instruments, rumbling of carts and operation of pre-sterilizing equipment.
