Duties
This position serves as a Range and Wildlife Management Branch Chief for the Green River District.
Oversees multiple resource programs: wildlife biology, botany, range, wild horse and burro, and weeds.
Supports the Lands and Minerals Division (minerals, realty and renewable energy) programs by allocating adequate staff time to work on that Division’s projects.
Provides direction in all phases of the organization’s program, work responsibilities and authorities by providing supervision, leadership, and guidance to staff.
Provides leadership, direction and decisions required to implement and carry out multiple use and ecosystem management of resources consistent with policies and within delegated authority.
Assigns and reviews environmental analysis work for the biological resources sections pertaining to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation.
Oversees the range program by supervising and directing staff to perform allotment management work including permit administration, collecting fees and administering grazing on federal lands.
Acts in a supervisory capacity to oversee and provide feedback on subordinates’ performance and conduct as well as developing training programs for entry level employees.
Acts as a principle biological advisor by coordinating plans and actions with upper-level management, conservation organizations, special interest groups and public land users.
Ensures compliance with the Endangered Species Act (ESA, wetland protection, threatened and endangered plants and animals, sensitive species, Sage Grouse and other wildlife-related laws.
Supervises and mentors employees.
Requirements

To qualify at the GS-12 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Supervisory Natural Resources Specialist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: managing and coordinating biological or ranger programs; reviewing and editing technical documents associated with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process; and overseeing wildlife habitat field inventories and monitoring studies.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work is primarily in an office setting. There is frequent travel to field sites via four-wheel drive vehicles, fixed wing aircraft, helicopter, and boats. There is a potential for adverse climatic conditions. Field work involves walking, bending, and climbing on steep and rough terrain.
Work Environment: Most work is in an office setting. Field sites involve exposure to adverse weather, i.e., rain, snow, cold and/or heat. Some outdoor work requires special safety precautions. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
Education
This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have:

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
-
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
