Attorneys in the CHU represent persons under a sentence of death in habeas corpus proceedings in the federal court. Applicants must be client-centered, team-oriented, exhibit strong research and writing skills, and demonstrate a commitment to criminal defense for those facing the death penalty. Irregular hours and regular travel are often required.

Requirements

Qualifications

An assistant federal public defender must be: (1) a graduate of an accredited law school, (2) admitted to practice in good standing before the highest court of a state; and (3) able to obtain permission to practice in the U.S. District Court upon entrance on duty.
