Temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours in a service year may be terminated early or extended depending on management needs. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April to May, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2024. This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate

Duties

Major duties include: Operates outboard motor boats up to 18 feet in length or diesel powered twin screw Inboard boats up to 32 feet. Transports personnel, supplies, and materials to and from various locations around the park by using a variety of courses, often in non-protected areas with viable weather. Use of radar, LORAN, and GPS technologies is often required. Services, cleans, paints, and performs minor maintenance to assigned boats. Moves supplies and materials to and from the dock to storage areas. May serve as a leader of trail and campground work crews and relays instructions from supervisor to work crews. Maintains trails and campgrounds to established standards and maintains tent camps following park regulations and Leave No Trace ethics. Physical Demands: Strenuous activity is required on a daily basis. This involves: Lifting and carrying of up to 75 lbs. of materials, and other objects; loading and unloading boats of supplies and materials. Heavy pushing and pulling, and carrying or moving awkward objects. While loading boats and at project sites, most of the day is spent standing or walking with frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling. While operating boats, up to 7 hours a day may be spent sitting. Working Conditions: Work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather. Conditions range from snow, sleet and rain to hot, humid days during the course of the season. Travel by small boat on Lake Superior is frequently hazardous due to fog, wind, waves, etc. The primary boats operated are enclosed cabin boats. Work hazards: Work on slippery or unstable surfaces, heavy lifting, cuts from power and hand tools, bruises, splinters, and insect bites, working for lengthy periods in mud and water, strenuous work during hot weather, cold weather with the danger of hypothermia, exposure to high noise and vibrations from boats and tools. A life jacket must be worn.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT) Operation of Motor Vehicles Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. Ability to Operate Safely (Motor Vehicles) Reliability and dependability as a small craft operator Ability to Operate Safely (Non-Motor Vehicles) If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
