Duties

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-09. At the GS-08 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-09. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher-level work, and availability of funds.
The Dental Laboratory Technician is responsible for the complete fabrication of most dental prosthetic appliances including porcelain fused to metal crowns and bridges, gold crowns and bridges, gold inlays, precision attachments, implant restorations and appliances, hader bars, full dentures, partial dentures, night guards, orthodontic appliances, and special maxillofacial prosthetic appliances. Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Consulting with general dentists, prosthodontists, and oral surgeons and residents who are seeking his/her recommendations regarding difficult design and construction problems in the fabrication of intraoral restorations and appliances
Fabricating the most intricate and unusually complex prosthetic restorations and maxillofacial appliances including occlusal splints, implant borne crowns and bridges, precision attachment appliances, custom characterized crowns, bridges and removable appliances, and special maxillofacial prosthetic appliances such as obturators and artificial noses
Undertaking and carrying to completion all prosthetic projects independently regardless of design complexity or construction problems
Participating in efforts to improve the design and function of prosthetic appliances, and tests specific materials used in their construction
Testing the usefulness and efficiency of new laboratory equipment
Analyzing and modifying laboratory processes as needed to improve efficiency and outcomes
Serving as an integral part of the Dental Service education mission effort thru planning and conducting laboratory and classroom instruction of dental residents and other trainees
Inventorying dental laboratory supplies and precious metals
Overseeing the maintenance of the physical condition of the dental laboratory to ensure that it is a clean, neat and safe environment in which to work
Managing the flow of laboratory work in an effective manner by assisting with the scheduling of cases and ensuring that cases are completed on time
Communicating and interacts effectively with the Dental Service staff and trainees
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday; 08:00 a.m. to 04:30 p.m.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirement: The following are minimum requirements for appointment as a Dental Laboratory Technician in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), which all applicants must met.
Specialized Experience (GS-08): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (i.e., GS-07). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. (CLEAR DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your resume must show complete information for each job entry, such as beginning and ending dates of employment, duties performed, and/or total hours worked per week.) OR,
Education (GS-08): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one and a half years of graduate education (27 semester hours) in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. NOTE: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. Combination (GS-08): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education beyond as described above.
