About the Position: This position is located at Fort Carson, Colorado with the Department of Preventive Medicine Health Physics. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation

Duties

Responsible for planning, implementing and operating a Radiological Safety Program for the hospital and other attached or assigned organizations. Review, analyze, interpret and disseminate policies and directives related to the Radiological Safety Program. Develop methods and procedures for the handling, using, storing, and disposing of radioactive materials. Review procurement documents for inclusion of proper requirements involving radioactive materials and equipment. Conduct on-site inspections and surveys of operations and facilities to ensure compliance with established standards and requirements. Serve as consultant and advisor to all levels of personnel and contractors on the health physics aspect of facilities, equipment, and material. Develop and provides radiological health and safety training for supervisors and workers.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Complete and provide a certificate of training per DA Pam 385-24, DA Pam 40-18 and 49 CFR 173.1 that has been successfully completed within one year of hire if not upon hire.
  • Annual Seasonal Influenza vaccination is required.
  • A one-year probationary period maybe required.
  • Immunizations is required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens This is a Permanent position. May be filled at the GS-07, GS-09 or GS-11 grade levels. If selected at a lower grade, non-competitive promotion to the full performance GS-11 grade level is authorized. In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. BASICE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR ALL GRADES: Degree: Natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus. OR Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. (NOTE: YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.) Specialized Experience GS-07: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled including:1) Experience researching radiation detection; AND 2) Experience researching radiation safety. OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: natural science, physical science, or engineering. (NOTE: YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.) OR Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion (or completion no later than December 2019) of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.). In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses, OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/). NOTE: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) was taken on a pass/fail or similar basis, your S.A.A. claim must be based on class standing or membership in an honor society and you must provide evidence of your class standing or honor society membership with your application. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages. (NOTE: YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.) Specialized Experience GS-09: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled including:1) Experience with handling radioactive material; AND2) Experience using instruments for radiation detection. OR 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. (NOTE: YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.) Specialized Experience GS-11: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled including:1) Assisting with planning for radioactive material disposal; AND 2) Assisting with packaging radioactive material for transport. OR 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. (NOTE: YOU MUST ATTACH A COPY OF YOUR TRANSCRIPTS.)
