The VA South Texas Health Care System is seeking a Registered Nurse to service as the Assistant Nurse Manager for the Polytrauma Rehab Center in San Antonio, TX.

Duties

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) serves as the designated first-line supervisory authority, responsibility, and accountability for the 24/7 operations of their units/areas, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice. The ANM, along with the Nurse Manager, have continuing responsibility for the following functions: 1. Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities, and preparing schedules for completion of work. 2. Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of subordinates. 3. Evaluating the performance of subordinates. 4. Giving advice, counsel, or instruction to the subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters. 5. Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors. 6. Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training. In addition, only the Nurse Manager has the responsibility for: a. Making recommendations for appointments, advancements, or reassignments of subordinates. b. Recommending and/or taking disciplinary action where appropriate. 7. Responsible for performance improvement, customer service/patient satisfaction. 8. Patient and employee safety. 9. Review and interviewing eligible candidates. 10. Employee relations and Labor relations. 11. Standards of Care and Practice. 12. Ensuring the safety and cleanliness of the work environment. 13. Knowledge of accreditation and regulatory standards. 14. Actively develops and manages collaborative partnerships with physicians and other clinicians. 15. Responsible for staffing their units/areas on a continual basis for 24/7 operation. 16. Working with other Nurse Manager and Staffing Coordinator/Nurse Officer on Duty to identify and share resources. 17. Responsible for time scheduling of the unit coach's staff. 18. Deals with employee conduct and performance issues. 19. Completes recurring reports and performance evaluations in a timely manner. 20. Participates on service and medical center committees and task forces to improve nursing practice and patient care. 21. Identifies educational needs of staff and ensures that these needs are addressed. 22. Has an integral role in supporting and facilitating student nurse clinical experiences, as well as orienting new Nurse Managers/Assistant Nurse Managers and nursing staff. 23. Works in partnership with the Local AFGE Union and adheres to EEO principles. 24. In absence of a Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager will be designated to handle administrative and clinical issues, such as staffing coverage, granting leave, and patient and/or staff issues. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. License: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: MSN Rehab/Long term care experience CRRN or other related certification 5 years nursing experience 1-3 years rehab nursing experience Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; Moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; Straight pulling (1 hour); Pushing (1-3 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (4 hours); Standing (2-7 hours); Kneeling (2 hours); Repeated bending (2 hours); Climbing, use of legs and arms; Both legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Vision 20/40 DVA, Corrected; Both eyes required; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Hearing (aid may be permitted); Sitting (8 hours); Simple grasping (2-4 hours); Fine manipulation (including keyboarding 4-6 hours); Twisting (2 hours); Mental and emotional stability.

EDUCATION ACCREDITATION: The Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BSN), or Master of Science Degree in Nursing (MSN) must be recognized by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by either of the following accrediting agencies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
  1. The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) OR
  2. The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
  3. ACEN/NLNAC or CCNE program or degree accreditation may also be found under the U.S. Department of Education
