Duties
This position serves as a Wildlife Biologist for the West Desert District.
In coordination with senior wildlife biologists, works to identify impacts to wildlife habitat and sensitive species by other resource activities.
Design and assist in implementing habitat improvement and restoration projects for field office in coordination with more senior wildlife biologist or the supervisor.
Prepare, evaluate, and conduct progressively more complex biological analyses of wildlife ecology and behavior as it relates to land and water resource projects.
With assistance from higher graded Biologist, reviews wildlife habitat quality and wildlife populations and incorporates the findings into rangeland health assessments.
May serve on field level interdisciplinary teams responsible for writing and reviewing multi-field office biological input to environmental assessments, biological assessments, development of protective stipulations, and resource management plans.
Participates as a trainee to provide input on wildlife projects to the wildlife portion of the local office’s annual work plan.
Document, evaluate, and report any changes in habitat status.

In addition to the basic education requirements, to qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Wildlife Biologist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: knowledge of basic principles and concepts related to wildlife biology; using spreadsheets and mapping software to input data and generate reports; collecting scientific data to conduct wildlife inventories; surveying, mapping and documenting a variety of wildlife species and habitat conditions.
OR Education:
To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study.
OR Superior Academic Achievement: (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.
OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary but may occasionally require some physical extertion such as walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces and exposure to extreme temperatures. The field duties of this position require that the employee operate four-wheel drive vehicles on and off roads in isolated areas.
Work Environment: Work is performed in the office and field locations under a variety of topographic and climatic conditions.
Education
This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have:
- Degree: biological science that included:
- At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
- At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
- At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
OR
- Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
