Duties

Examines, identifies and verifies a variety of materials, complete equipment items, technical components, parts, and commodities. Receives, checks, verifies, sorts and classifies materials and equipment by stock number, size, classification and condition. Uses technical manuals to identify and verify materials. Determines the correct condition code, classification, repairability or non-repairability of items and estimates economic feasibility or cost of repair. Initiates records to document receiving and processing discrepancies and material defects found during phases of examination. Operates forklifts with a capacity of lifting loads weighing up to 15,000 lbs and related materials handling equipment to deliver, relocate, up-load, off-load, and move materials and equipment.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Materials Examiner and Identifier without more than normal supervision (SOE): Verifies shipment destination, quantity, and cube against the shipping paperwork on products received; examines a wide variety of materials received from any source; verifies stock numbers, nomenclature, type, size, condition, date of pack, level of pack, quantity and markings to ascertain compliance with contract or purchase agreement; determines the correct condition code, classification, repairability of items and estimates economic feasibility or cost of repairs; documents receiving and processing discrepancies and material defects found during phases of examination. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Performs moderate to heavy lifting (up to 40 pounds, requesting assistance for those items weighing more than 40 pounds). Moves and position materiel by hand or hand truck. Heavier and bulky/unwieldy materiel is moved by materials handling equipment, or with the assistance of coworkers. Work requires standing and/or walking for lengthy periods of time and often requires bending, stooping, pushing, and/or pulling materiel. Working Conditions: Work is performed in a warehouse environment or in outside work areas on a year-round basis. May work in a congested mechanized automated environment with constant movement of conveyors and materials handling equipment. May be subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, and scrapes in moving or handling equipment. Subject to hazards involved in working near moving equipment such as conveyors, tow-line systems, and materials handling equipment. In addition, may also be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, solvents, and to high noise levels in mechanized work areas. When working with hazardous materials, may be subject to exposure from radiation, toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical fumes. SAFETY AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area assigned, as directed by the supervisor. Types of required protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, and foot protection, protective clothing (gloves apron, coveralls, etc.). Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. Employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary, when working near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment.
