About the Position: The Corps provides safe, reliable, efficient, and environmentally sustainable waterborne transportation systems (channels, harbors, and waterways) for movement of commerce, national security needs, and recreation. This position will assist in the planning and managing of a comprehensive safety occupational health program to eliminate or control the risk of injury to personnel assigned to all phases of the safety and occupational health activities in Channels and Harbors.

Duties

Enforces safety and occupational health principles, methods, and techniques which includes understanding OSHA requirements. Investigate mishaps involving personnel or damage to machinery, tools, materials, or equipment. Address any near misses, injuries, or accidents and brief the Operations Project Manager. Evaluate, procure, and distribute accident prevention material and provide training. Assist with the hearing conservation program, the respiratory protection program, fall protection program, and confined space program. Communicate with the District Diving Coordinator to discuss policy and safe work practices for diving operations. Perform administrative functions for the SOHO in such as timekeeping, travel, correspondence, and electronic records management.

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is defined as applying federal safety standards applicable to industrial work processes. This experience also includes experience with ensuring environmental compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations as well as performing site inspections and evaluating work practices to determine compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Specialized experience also includes recommending changes to control or eliminate potential or existing hazards or violations. In addition, specialized experience includes advising supervisors of appropriate safety and occupational health measures to control or eliminate hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service which is the GS-09 or equivalent. -OR- Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
