This position is located in the Logistics Service Mail Room at the San Francisco VA Medical Center in San Francisco, CA. The Mail Clark is responsible for sorting and routing all mail and packages received at the Medical Center on a timely basis.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:
Receiving mail and packages from the U.S. Post Office and commercial delivery companies such as UPS, FEDEX, etc.
Inspecting for damage, hazardous materials, containing valuables, or suspicious articles taking appropriate action in accordance with SFMAC policies, VA regulations and laws.
Soring mail for distribution into numerous categories, identifying mail or packages not to be opened, requiring individual tracking, or special handling.
Identifying and locating individual mail recipients for delivery when not specified on mail/package.
Using knowledge of technical, medical and scientific terminology in routing medical center mail and packages.
Distributing and picking up mail at delivery points within the medical center, based on the routine scheduled and unscheduled destination using good judgement in expediting delivery to avoid delays.
Processing registered, certified, and insured materials both incoming and outgoing mail; maintaining tracking numbers, recording by name, room, service, telephone number and date of individual mail and packages.
Receiving and distributing requests for flags of deceased Veterans, maintaining records of reach request.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-4 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING:
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: You must possess at least one year of general experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this Mail Clerk position to be filled. General experience includes progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.)

EDUCATION: You must have successfully completed two years of education above the high school level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. One full year of graduate education is considered to be 18 semester hours. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

COMBINATION: You must possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and general experience to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-4 level (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE AND COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Long periods of standing and walking while sorting and delivery of mail/packages. Recurring lifting of moderately heavy materials (under 50 pounds) and occasional lifting and carrying of heavier materials.
