About the Position: Serve as the Equine Facilities and Equipment Manager for the U.S. Army Caisson Platoon, 1st Battalion, 3d United States Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). Responsible for the development and implementation of management strategies pertaining to the operations and upkeep of equine facilities, pastures, and tack.

Duties

Direct facilities maintenance and upkeep in accordance with all federal, state, installation, and Army policies and regulations. Manage all aspects of maintenance and upkeep for the horse areas including pastures, hay barn, grain shed, and other similar areas. Ensure the equine areas of the property are clean and organized and kept at a high standard of professional appearance. Implement and maintain a pasture management plan which includes pasture renovation and management, pasture and grazing management, soil fertility and weed control, and mowing and compost spreading. Maintain sanitary conditions in all components of the pasture and training arena, including the horse stables facility, handling, and treatment areas. Oversee repairs of fences and gates to ensure safety of horses, staff, and guests. Manage the Caisson Platoon leather shop and serve as subject matter expert for all tack fabrication, utilization, and accountability issues. Provide training and instruction; demonstrates proper work methods; and ensures required plans, material and tools are available to three or more Soldiers in accomplishing their trade. Develop leather shop budget and provide guidance on priority and procurement ensuring needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Work with the equine veterinarian to ensure horses receive proper nutrition from grass and hay. Oversees all administrative supply operations, policies, and procedures; execution of supply requisitioning and receipt actions and excess property turn-in procedures; and inventory and stock control functions and property accountability procedures.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Pre-employment physical and periodic physicals as directed thereafter. Required to stand for several hours duration and lift up to 80 pounds.
  • Required to submit a Financial Disclosure Statement, OGE 450, upon entering the position and annually thereafter in accordance with DOD Directive 5500-7-R, Joint Ethics Regulation, dated 23 March 2006.

Qualifications

Required Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) maintenance and upkeep of equine facilities; 2) pasture management; 3) management and fabrication of equine tack; 3) harness fabrication and maintenance. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).
