About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. The historic site is the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. West Point is a self-contained city with housing, a Department of Public Works, libraries, hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. Employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theater, Hudson Valley's performing arts center, and recreational facilities.
Duties
Copy edits complex manuscripts (e.g., books, journals, conference reports, etc.) on a variety of scholarly topics.
Ensures software styles, publishing standards, and English grammar are applied consistently within a document.
Research information using library resources and electronic sources.
Serves as the primary point of contract for world-renowned subject matter experts and other stakeholders throughout the editing process.
Consistently applies style guide standards while maintaining the tone of original submissions.

- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS 09Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) applying knowledge of grammar, writing, editing practices, style guides and/or publishing processes to edit manuscripts; and 2) using current desktop publishing software such as Adobe Cloud/InDesign. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: English, Journalism or Communications.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
GS11Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) applying knowledge of grammar, writing, editing practices, style guides and publishing processes to edit manuscripts; 2) using current desktop publishing software such as Adobe Cloud/InDesign; 3) editing manuscripts and/or recommending changes to improve clarity. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: English, Journalism or Communications.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
