About the Position: This position will be located at the 60th MDG Travis AFB, Nutritional Medicine. Travis Air Force Base in California is located in Solano County in Northern California. It is halfway between Sacramento and San Francisco. Duties
Prepare meat/fish/poultry using a variety of cooking methods.
Check silverware, trays, and napkin dispensers for cleanliness and adequate supply.
Set up and/or erase menu boards and food item description cards.
Prepare and cook a variety of menu items, including regular and therapeutic diet entrees.
Adjust standardized recipes for the number of servings required in large quantity cooking.
Work alone or with supervisor to perform roasting, broiling, baking, frying, grilling, boiling, steaming, and stewing meats.
Independently prepare soups, stocks, broths, gravies and sauces without the use of package mixes.
Cook foods to proper temperatures, maintain proper food temperatures during holding, transport, re-heating, and serving to assure quality control and food safety.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter.
- This position is included in the TB/Hep B/Rubella testing and/or immunization program(s).
- This position may require lifting up to 44 lbs.
- A food handler’s certificate is required. Failure to obtain this certification within 6 months from employment may subject the incumbent to adverse action.
- This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules. The shifts would be: 0500-1330, 0930-1730.
- This position may require rotating shifts (i.e. work schedule that requires employees to continuously rotate from one shift to another at predetermined intervals).

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Cook ~ without more than normal supervision.
I can prepare meals for regular and modified diets using prescribed recipes and cooking techniques to include roast, broils/bakes, steam, and stewed meats, fish, poultry and vegetables, soups, sauces, stocks, broth and gravies. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Cooks at this grade level perform work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing and pulling, and bending. They frequently lift or move objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 18 kilograms (40 pounds) with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in kitchen areas which are well lighted but are often hot and noisy. The cooks are exposed to steam, fumes, and odors from cooking and to extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units. There is danger of slipping on wet floors that have been recently mopped or where food has been spilled. They are subject to possible cuts from knives and burns from steam, hot foods, stoves, and hot grease and water.
