The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April through September, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Duties

Provides daily on-site leadership for trail maintenance crews of three or more laborers as well as various volunteer and conservations groups. Responsible for passing instructions from supervisor to crew members and plans daily assignments ensuring safe work practices and safety equipment are utilized. Demonstrates proper work methods and sets the pace. Responsible for maintaining daily documentation for crew members. Keeps logs of supplies and materials in inventory format. Organizes tool caches and maintains adequate tool inventory for work projects. Teaches and works with crews to maintain trails and campgrounds, set up and maintain tent sights adhering to park regulations as well as Leave No Trace ethics, and works on other duties as assigned. Leads crews in clearing of developed areas, trails, and campgrounds of fallen and hazardous trees, brushing, erosion control, installation of new trails, privy and shelter maintenance, bridging and signage repair, and tool and equipment maintenance.

Address your knowledge, skills and/or abilities in the areas shown in the job-related factors. Physical Demands: Strenuous activity is required on a daily basis. This involves: Lifting and carrying of up to 75 lbs. of materials, and other objects; loading and unloading boats of supplies and materials, etc.; heavy pushing and pulling, and carrying or moving awkward objects. Assistance is available if needed to handle heavy, bulky, or awkward items. While loading boats and at project sites, nearly the entire day is spent standing or walking with frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling. While operating boats, up to 7 hours a day may be spent sitting. Working Conditions: Nearly all work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather. Weather conditions range from snow and sleet to rain to hot, humid summer days during the course of the season which occurs from late April to late October. Travel by small boat on Lake Superior is frequently hazardous due to fog, wind, waves, etc. The primary boats operated are enclosed cabin boats; however, the incumbent may be required to leave the cabin area during mooring operations, etc., if no other personnel are on the boat. Work hazards include: work on slippery or unstable surfaces, heavy lifting and felling trees, cuts from power and hand tools, bruises, splinters, and insect bites, working for lengthy periods in mud and water, strenuous work during hot weather, cold weather with the danger of hypothermia, exposure to high noise and vibrations from boats and tools. A life jacket must be worn. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. CTAP/ICTAP Eligible Candidates: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.
