The Laundry Machine Operator - Motor Vehicle position is located in the Laundry Section of Environmental Management Service at the VA Medical Center in Lyons, NJ

Duties

The major duties include, but are not limited to: Operates three (3) 100 pound dryers and three (3) 50 pound washer extractors Loads and unloads laundry machines to launder soiled linen, dye articles, and on occasions wash specialty items, drapes, etc. Distributes articles evenly to balance loads, sets timer for sufficient water extraction adding appropriate washing compounds Loads and unloads tumbling machines with articles to be fluffed and dried, setting controls for temperature and drying time Folds linen and loads carts for distribution and delivery Operates 9.3 ton truck equipped with hydraulic tailgate Transports linen, materials, supplies, and equipment on stations, and loads/unloads same with or without assistance Performs other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 6am until 2:30pm, including weekends and holidays Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Not Approved

Physical eforts and Working Conditions: This position requires frequent walking, lifting, pushing, pulling and stooping. Routinely pushing and pulling linen carts weighing over 600 pounds and lifting bundles of linen weighing over 60 pounds. Work requires stamina and strength to perform heavy physical tasks over long periods of time. Muscular effort and coordination is required when making emergency road repairs. Incumbent is subject to extreme noise, heat, steam, water, humidity and exposure to bruises from moving carts and equipment. The Operator is required to work outside, frequently exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading the vehicle. Works in slippery loading areas and walkways and is subject to cuts bruises and/or injuries as a result of accidents while driving, loading and unloading trucks. The driver is required to move among Circle I, Circle II, and the Nursing Home, loading/unloading clean and soiled linen. Incumbent is exposed to noxious fumes from engines and traffic hazards Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
