Duties

This position serves as a Wildlife Biologist for the Green River District and West Desert District. Serves on interdisciplinary teams (IDT) responsible for writing and reviewing biological input for environmental assessments, biological assessments, protective stipulations and resource management plans. Serves as an IDT member on oil and gas development duties in the field and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) projects. Identifies impacts to wildlife habitat and Threatened and Endangered species by other resource activities. Designs and implements habitat improvement and restoration projects for the field office in coordination with other programs, other Federal agencies, State agency representatives and nongovernment organizations. Defines and evaluates an array of complex alternatives and identifies courses of action to promote wildlife management objectives and minimizes impact to Wildlife habitats. Works closely with diverse groups of people including members of the general public, tribes and other Federal, State, and local agencies and representatives. Writes technical reports and evaluations after researching, collecting and interpreting data, verifying information and analyzing a variety of complex directions, regulations and information. Completes both formal and informal Section 7 Consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Performs surveys and monitoring of wildlife habitat in order to assess current conditions as well as other factors affecting wildlife populations and habitat.

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. In addition to the basic requirements, to qualify at the GS-09 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Wildlife Biologist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: planning and conducting wildlife field inventories and monitoring studies; interpreting data and assisting in preparing wildlife management plans; and conducting wildlife habitat surveys, monitoring habitat and preparing technical reports. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Master's or equivalent degree, or two (2) full years (36 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 18 semester hours may be combined with experience. In addition to the basic requirements, to qualify at the GS-11 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Wildlife Biologist. Qualifying specialized experience includes: preparing wildlife portions of environmental documents such as environmental assessments; analyzing surface use proposals in habitat containing Threatened and Endangered Species; planning and conducting wildlife field inventories and monitoring studies; and interpreting data and preparing wildlife habitat management plans. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three (3) full years (54 semester hours) of graduate-level education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of 36 semester hours may be combined with experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: This position requires long periods of standing; walking or riding horses over rough terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching, or similar activities. Work may also include frequent lifting of moderately heavy items, such as equipment and samples that weigh less than 23 kilograms or approximately 50 pounds. Some of the work of the position is performed in an office however, there is also considerable field work involved in the performance of this work. In order to gather samples and complete monitoring activities, the individual may be frequently required to walk or ride vehicles over rough terrain, perform duties that require recurring bending, crouching, stooping, reaching or lifting. Work may also include lifting of moderately heavy items, such equipment and samples. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards. Work Environment: This work involves exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, such as those due to: adverse weather conditions, such as high winds and low or high temperatures, falling trees; and hostile wildlife. The work of this position is sometimes performed in an office setting with adequate lighting and temperatures. However, when necessary to complete the work, there is outdoor exposure. Outdoor exposure requires some discomfort in extremes of temperature or inclement weather. The incumbent may be subjected to hostile wildlife, chemical and physical hazards.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have:

1. Degree: biological science that included:
   • At least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and
   • At least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
   • At least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.

   OR

2. Combination of education and experience: equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
