This position is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), VA Medical Center, in Providence, RI. The primary purpose of this position is to transport patients and their caregivers, as well as linens, equipment, and/or other related items throughout the medical center. Applicants to this position must possess a valid, state-issued driver's license with clean driving record.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Operate a variety of vehicles (gas, diesel, and/or electric) with varying number of axles, weights, and control systems.
Transport patients, their caregivers, and associated medical support equipment throughout the medical campus.
Perform appropriate load distribution and securing of loads when maneuvering large vehicles in confined areas that are congested with other vehicles and/or pedestrian traffic.
Evaluate conditions and limits of roads, and assess traffic hazards.
Practice defensive driving techniques at all times while operating vehicles in the performance of job duties.
Assume responsibility for the safety of all passengers in the vehicle being operated; to include instructing passengers in posted rules for riding in the vehicle.
Perform proper loading/unloading of patients and equipment to prevent damage to the cargo, injury to the passengers, or damage to the vehicle.
Complete trip tickets, and inspection records (as required).
Present a courteous attitude towards patients, co-workers, and visitors.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: This position requires a current, valid state driver's license. Do not upload a copy of your license at this time. If an interview is requested, you may be required to provide a copy of your current, valid, and unrestricted state driver's license.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The employee is required to lift heavy objects while loading and unloading cargo. The motor vehicle operator assists patients in and out of vehicles, securing mobility aids in preparation for transit. The position requires prolonged periods of driving, sometimes in times of traffic congestion, and the operator must be constantly alert and aware of his/her surroundings. Working conditions for this position are hazardous. The operator may be required to drive on steep terrain during periods of inclement weather. The operator is subjected to the stress of driving for long periods of time in heavy traffic conditions. The position requires the employee to be exposed to exhaust fumes and loud noises daily. The operator will also work outside in the elements for periods of time (i.e., rain, snow and ice and extreme heat).
