The Research Scientist serves as a Clinical Research Coordinator and the primary purpose of this position is to coordinate the execution of national and local clinical human subject research trials under the direct oversight of the Principal Investigators. The position is located at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.
Duties

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (13 months - may be extended up to 4 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4-year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
Duties include but may not be limited to:
Assist with recruiting and enrolling participants into the research study.
Obtain informed consent from study participants.
Utilize working knowledge of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and its regulations.
Prepare and maintain all research study records, per study protocol.
Create and maintain appropriate tracking and filing systems for all study documentation.
Perform statistical queries, extract data, and prepare reports.
Conduct participant study interviews.
Write, edit, and produce a variety of reports.
Prepare documents (i.e., manuscripts) for submission to the IRB.
Serve as a liaison and answer inquiries regarding the study from participants, staff and stakeholders.
Administer a range of clinical, psychometric and psycho-physiological assessments to study participants.
Administer standardized tests to measure and track patient response.
Recruit and retain candidates for research studies.
Track participants in research study through medical chart review and communication with participants, assigned therapist, and the Site Investigator (SI).
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR THE 0601 SERIES: EDUCATION (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED):
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirement above, applicant(s) must meet one of the following to qualify for this position:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Requires at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level in the Federal service that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this Research Health Scientist position to be filled. Specialized experience includes assisting with recruiting and screening human research study participants; maintaining research study databases; and preparing reports. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Successful completion oftwo years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position, which provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to the work of this position. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate-level education (beyond the first year) and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary. The employee uses a computer and standard office equipment to complete tasks. Physical activity involves walking, bending, or stooping, climbing stairs, carrying supplies. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
