This position is located at the Columbia VA Health Care System in Columbia, South Carolina. The Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) will serve in the role of an Electrocardiographic Administrator who provides oversight to the technical aspects, processes, uploads and completion of studies. The incumbent will perform diagnostic examinations or medical treatment procedures as part of the diagnosis and treatment of patients where and when needed.

Duties

The Electrocardiographic Administrator primary function is to ensure accurate and timely processing of EKGs from the Columbia VAHC and associated CBOC to the MUSE and processing to the providers for interpretation. This position requires advanced knowledge of the EKG data management system, a multi-component system that requires the EKG administrator to understand the workings of each individual part in its entirety. The EKG administrator's secondary duty is to perform EKG's in a safe and efficient fashion to ensure ongoing high quality of care and assist the provider in the performance of other cardiology tests. Other duties include, but are not limited to: The EKG administrator is responsible for the entire EKG process and consults with the senior level EKG administrator and/or supervisor when necessary. The EKG administrator performs 12 lead EKG's on a routine and emergent basis in the EKG lab, at the patient's bedside, and in other areas of the facility as needed, including answering pages and responding to stat requests and codes. The EKG administrator is also able to aid the provider in relation to EKGs during Myocardial Perfusion Studies (MPS). The EKG administrator observes patients and equipment during tests to prevent artifacts due to machine, patient, or electrical interference. The EKG administrator recognizes gross abnormalities in EKG pattern and rhythm and, if present, brings them to the attention of the staff cardiologist promptly. T he EKG administrator uses comprehensive problem-solving skills of electrode placement on amputees, burn cases, bandaged, or cast patients. The EKG administrator should be familiar with code carts and defibrillators used in cardiac emergencies. Should be able to assist in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and recognize cardiac arrest, calling attention to this when necessary, and instituting basic life support techniques. The EKG administrator is responsible for daily quality assurance checks of the cardiac defibrillator. The EKG administrator prepares the patient for the cardiologist or exercise physiologist to perform treadmill exercise and nuclear stress EKG's. The EKG administrator prepares the patient for all ambulatory cardiac event monitoring including 24 48-hour and 14-30-day event monitors. He or she is responsible for keeping updated on current technical literature and must have the ability to secure cooperation of patients while performing tests in a professional manner. The EKG administrator consistently provides courteous service to all veterans and their families, treating them with respect and dignity. The EKG administrator, as a member of the VA organization team, displays an attitude of caring and shows respect to everyone in the work environment. This includes working well with other personnel, maintaining harmony in the department, assisting in assuring the department is always covered, and willingness to perform other duties as assigned. Employee must have knowledge of and ability to apply policies and procedures associated with operational activities that affect workload data. Performs other duties as assigned by management. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Licensure or Certification: Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. English Language Proficiency: Lead Medical Instrument Technician (EKG) must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-8. Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. Experience at this level consists of: knowledge of advanced specialized procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. In addition, the candidate must must demonstrate the following technical KSAs. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's). KSAs 1, 2, 3, and 4 are appropriate for all positions at this level. KSAs 5 and 6 are to be used in accordance with their appropriateness for the specific assignment. 1. Knowledge of pharmacology related to specialized procedures. 2. Ability to provide briefings and orientations to hospital staff including physicians. 3. Knowledge of a variety of related acute disorders and diseases, their effects on organs, and methods of treatment. 4. Ability to perform more complex procedures such as SAECG (Signal Averaged ECG), Tilt table monitoring, electrophysiology monitoring, and event monitoring. 5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training. 6. Ability to manage and supervise employees. Certification. No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications.
