Serves as a technical assistant responsible for the collection, organization, and analysis of data for botanical species and plant habitats on a National Forest. The incumbent is also responsible for performing a variety of complex and recurring duties in support of wildlife habitat on the unit.
Duties
Independently, or as a crew leader, plans, participates, and conducts a variety of field studies of native and non-native botanical species and their habitats.
Coordinates with resource specialist in planning work.
Develops plans to collect data for use in habitat and species condition analyses.
Collects survey and inventory data to determine species identity, population characteristics, environmental conditions, and factors affecting the vigor and extent of the species and their habitat.
Requirements

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:
Successful completion of 1 year of appropriate graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics or other field of study directly related to the work of this position.
OR A combination of appropriate specialized experience (as described above) and appropriate graduate level education (as described above) that is beyond the first 1/2 year of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements.
GS-7: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 level in federal service. Specialized experience is defined as 2 or more of the following:
Taking readings, recording measurements, and making observations from field and laboratory (or other controlled environments) experiments/studies for science related projects in silviculture, forestry, ecology, biochemistry, and/or genetics and/or structure and function of ecosystems.
Maintaining inventory of chemicals, stock solutions, equipment and/or supplies for field and laboratory research.
Planning, organizing, and executing the details of a variety of experimental protocols/study designs related to biological science research (e.g., forestry, ecology, biochemistry, and/or genetics and/or structure and function of ecosystems).
Tabulating and summarizing data using personal computers and software packages.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
