About the Position: Serves as an Airfield Operations Specialist for Simmons Army Airfield (SAAF) and/or Mackall Army Airfield (MAAF), providing flight management operations to support aircraft arrival and departure operations at SAAF/MAAF. Utilizes weather, navigational, and other information to assist pilots in safe flight.
Duties
Arranges appropriate priority for distinguished visitors (DV), passenger and crew transportation, and special security requirements for aircraft arrivals and departures.
Processes flight plans, conducting necessary research and/or queries in the coordination of scheduled flights.
Respond to airfield incidents, accidents, or other emergencies.
Determine type and nature of emergency situations to enable appropriate response actions for aircraft in distress, including the determination of emergency and application of remedial measures.
Posts and maintains flight information publications (FLIPs), used for flight planning purposes, and ensures that such publications are current and accurate.
Provides Flight line Drivers Training to Soldiers, DA Civilians and Contractors as required.
Processes and approves/disapproves prior permission requirements (PPR), civil aircraft landing permits (CALPs), and Army aircraft landing authorization numbers (AALAN).
Provides aircrew advisory services, as well as pilot-to-dispatch advisory service through UHF, VHF, and FM radios.
Operates a government-owned-vehicle in the course of various airfield inspections/checks.
Provides detailed assistance to military pilots and pilots of private, foreign, and contract aircraft.
Effectively communicate with pilots, of all levels of experience, and other related air traffic facilities.
Requirements
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Flight-line Driver’s License per AR 95-2.
- This position has been identified as mission essential required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency situations may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends.
- This position requires irregular hours of work, and rotating shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays with high periods of stress.
- Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) may be required up to 10% of the time.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
- Must be able to pass pre-employment and periodic medical examinations.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing support to military and civilian aircrews, during scheduled and unscheduled flying and ground activities; coordinating flights schedules and providing pilots with assistance to facilitate continuity of aircraft operations, assistance with airfield facilities, and flight safety. Utilizes automated systems to review reports, compile data, and conduct analysis on airfield operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: accounting, business administration, business or commercial law, commerce, economics, engineering, finance, industrial management, statistics, traffic management, transportation, motor mechanics, or other fields related to the position.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
