This Medical Technician (Phlebotomy) position is located in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at the Bedford VA Medical Center in Bedford, Massachusetts. This position is full-time at 40 hours per week.

Duties

The incumbent serves as a Medical Health Technician in the Laboratory Section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Program. The incumbent is responsible for performing multiple duties in the central accessioning and specimen processing area. These complex duties include reference laboratory specimen processing, clerical functions, patient testing, and outpatient phlebotomy as necessary. Duties include but not limited to: Responsible for receiving and preparing requests for testing and specimens into the clinical laboratory and verifies the accuracy and completeness of the request. Receives telephonic inquires and communicating results to appropriate personnel. Follows procedures for processing biological specimens, understands sample requirements for tests and clearly communicates those requirements. Routes the specimens to the specific laboratory section that performs the testing. Assists healthcare personnel (MT/CLS) who deliver specimens by directing them to place the specimens in the proper location based on the type of testing and the laboratory section. Receives all specimens that are sent to VA and commercial reference laboratories for testing. Accepts or enters all requests for reference laboratory testing in the VISTA computer system. Uses order entry, CPRS and the laboratory computer options to order the appropriate tests for the patient. Processes all reference laboratory specimens according to strict guidelines to assure specimen integrity. Contacts the reference laboratories to research the requirements on new tests that are not identified in the reference laboratory directories. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00a-4:30p. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/01/2024. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-04) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Proficient in venipuncture technique in adult patients. Excellent communication skills; verbally and in writing using TEAMS, email, VISTA email, etc; competent computer skills required. Good customer services skills. Courteous, respectful, professional attitude with internal and external stakeholders. Excellent attention to detail is needed to accurately process lab samples without error. Ability to work autonomously and as a part of a team. Ability to organize and prioritize necessary for processing samples, building tracking logs, shipping samples. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced lab environment. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position to be filled. (Transcripts must be submitted at time of application). OR, Combination: Equivalent combinations of post-high school education and specialized experience, as described above. Note: only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. (Transcripts must be submitted at time of application). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: Work may involve lifting, standing, walking, bending, or sitting, any of which may be required for prolonged periods of time. The incumbent must be able to communicate verbally and have the digital dexterity and adequate vision to perform safe venipuncture procedures. Lifting will not exceed weight of 40 pounds. The incumbent will utilize all safety practices and equipment required by the laboratory, facility policy, accrediting and regulatory agencies for purposes of ensuring compliance with occupational safety requirements.
