This position is located at US Mint,Mint-Phi/Man/Design and Engraving Div. As a Toolmaker, you will develop non-standard die blank shapes for hub and die designs.
Duties
As a Toolmaker, you will:
Fabricate parts for machine tools, jigs and fixtures; determine work materials, procedures and sequences of operations working from blueprints, sketches, specifications and oral instructions; and, construct special tooling as required (e.g., gang fixtures, special collets for odd-sized dies, die sets and blocks for centering dies on hubbing presses, shields and drivers).
Machine and finish reduction hubs.
Manufacture master dies and work hubs, used to produce production dies, by establishing the impression on the prepared blank using a hydraulic press and shaping the hub or die to specified dimensions using various machine tools, such as lathes, cylindrical grinders and surface grinders.
Use various techniques to obtain specified dimensions in regard to height and depth of impressions, such as form grinding with special wheels, deburring, and polishing.
Grind centering slots in work hubs and prepare lead impressions and trial dies as required.
