Duties
Maintains social work records to document findings as means of accountability, to provide clinical care staff with pertinent information, and to develop data for clinical research.
Develops non-complex treatment plans based on assessment of psychological social and medical realities.
Performs non-complex psychosocial assessment of patients and families in order to identify those factors which have a bearing on his/her illness and recovery and his/her ability to cope with stress and the requirements of the research protocols.
Assesses financial needs of patient and family during hospital stay and determines resources to be allotted for assistance, consistent with the goal of maximizing adjustment to research protocols.
Participates in clinical conferences, staff rounds, multidisciplinary conferences, and nursing team meetings.
Incumbent provides, under supervision of an independently licensed clinical social worker, brief strategic and medical crisis counseling for patients and families in coordination with the primary medical team and adjunct consulting services.
With guidance, coordinates and manages continued care in dispersed locations, including remote regions of the United States and in foreign countries, where health care resources may be scarce or unavailable.

Qualifications
Education Qualification Requirement:
In order to qualify for a Social Worker, GS-0185 position, you must have a Master's Degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
Additional Qualifications Requirements:
A. In addition, in order to qualify for a Social Worker-GS-0185, at the GS-09 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks:conducting interviews with social service clients, relatives, caregivers and others to obtain pertinent information to be incorporated in the social case history as background for planning; developing initial tentative conclusions as to appropriate social services for individuals or families; giving information to social service clients, answering factual questions, and giving explanations and interpretations of agency social service policies and procedures that concern the clients.

B. Completion of two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree that is directly related to the duties of this position.
OR
C. A combination of post-graduate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.
