The Physical Therapist Clinical Specialist/Amputee Coordinator (PT/AC) is responsible for providing assessment and treatment intervention on an independent basis across the continuum of care and services provided by PM&RS, at the Charles George VAMC, located in Asheville, NC.

VA Careers - Physical Therapy: https://youtube.com/embed/Gi2hoFqIoqY The Physical Therapist duties include but is not limited to: Serves as a consultant to Rehabilitation staff and other medical staff in the evaluation and treatment of Amputee patients at the Charles George VA Medical Center. Serves as a subject matter expert on Amputee Physical Rehabilitation. Serves as a mentor to other therapists/students in the evaluation and treatment in the areas of rehabilitation with regards to Geriatrics. Provides in-service and clinical training programs to PM&RS staff and other medical staff on the topic of Amputees. Establishes and maintains contact with other medical staff involved with Amputee programing as it relates to rehabilitation, (in-patient, outpatient, CLC), via written, telephone, tele-health and personal communication on regular basis at the Western North Carolina Veterans Medical Center and VISN/National level. Develops and provides timely reports to Physical Therapy Supervisor, PM&RS department or Clinical Program Manager. Responsible for coordinating care throughout the continuum of care as it relates to amputee programing. This includes but is not limited by (Pre and post surgical) (Outpatient, Inpatient, CLC, and Home, as needed). Serves as PM&RS representative in areas of Amputee programing for various Medical Center committees. Serves as a PM&RS clinical and administrative staff leader across the continuum of PM&RS divisions/areas for education purposes and assist in the resolution of administrative level issues that occur during daily operations. Responsible for attending Amputee Clinic. Responsible that all Amputee programing is being monitored and following amputee directives as proposed nationally, VISN level, medical center level and service level. Directly communicated with the medical team as indicated for the Amputee population. Communicates with certified prosthetists to coordinate and or completes prosthetic checkouts of newly prescribed prosthesis, socket or componentry replacements as prescribed by PM&RS physiatrist/amputee clinic. Basic Requirements: Citizenship. Candidates must be a citizen of the United States. After a determination is made that it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens, necessary personnel may be appointed on a temporary basis under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 without regard to the citizenship requirements of 38 U.S.C. 7402 or any other law prohibiting the employment of or payment of compensation to a person who is not a citizen of the United States. Candidates must meet all other requirements for the grade and position concerned. English Language Proficiency. PTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Education and Experience: A Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy AND five (5) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist OR Master's degree in Physical Therapy AND two (2) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist OR Doctorate degree in physical therapy. License: Physical therapists must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, one year of progressively complex experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level and one of the following: Evidence of a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice directly in the specialty area. This time must be between the past two and five years; or Board Certification in the Geriatric Physical Therapy recognized by the ABPTS; or Completion of a fellowship program; or An additional advanced degree in a related field. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the all following KSAs. Advanced knowledge and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in a specialized treatment area of physical therapy. Ability to serve as a consultant and subject matter expert for health care providers regarding the delivery of care within a specialized content area of physical therapy. Ability to teach and mentor medical center staff in a specialized content area of physical therapy. Ability to guide the work of a multi-disciplinary team in a specialized content area of physical therapy. Advanced knowledge and expert skill to perform and interpret specialized procedures and tests in evaluating the treatment outcomes in the assigned specialty content area Assignment: Clinical Specialists have advanced knowledge and demonstrate expert clinical practice skills in providing assessment and treatment interventions across the continuum of care. He/she utilizes advanced knowledge and expertise to modify treatment plans and to identify therapeutic activity interventions based on the changing needs, goals and performance of patients. Clinical Specialists have advanced training in specialized technology related to their area of practice. He/she establishes and maintains contact with other health care providers involved in patient care via written, telephone, and personal communication on a regular basis. He/she exercises expert professional judgment to establish appropriate discharge planning recommendations to ensure safe discharge from inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation programs. If the medical center has a PT residency program, the clinical specialist may be on faculty for the program. References: VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G12, Physical Therapist Qualifications.
