The Information Receptionist position is assigned to the Stakeholder Relations Service under the direct supervision of the Supervisory Public Affairs Officer at the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This position serves as the receptionist in support of the overall mission of the VA Medical Center and enhance the level of patient satisfaction and positive customer satisfaction in day-to-day operations.
Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include:
Receives and directs callers and visitors
Provides necessary information to patients and visitors
Assists patients in locating clinical appointments, using the self-check-in machines, and arranges transportation for patients unable to drive because of medical conditions
Ensures patients needing a wheelchair receive assistance
Escorts patients to their appointment location, if needed
Provides information about the organization, its functions, activities, and personnel
Assists veterans in signing on to VA's Personal Health Record System, MyHealtheVet, for the first time
Interacts effectively with visitors/patients and staff through appropriate interpersonal relations
Approaches patients, families, staff and volunteers with kindness and courtesy
Communicates effectively, verbally and in writing
Provides emotional support to patient
Adheres to all safety and health standards, regulations, and work practices and uses proper protective equipment, as required
Assists in tracking patient clinic location, directions requests, signage and wayfinding deficiencies, and other opportunities for improvement as identified
Assists in maintaining updated lists of Medical Center layouts and guides, along with up-to-date renovation projects and inquiry tallies
Performs other duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following:
Experience: One (1) full year of general experience performing progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Experience includes providing customer service and communicating with a wide variety of people of different backgrounds. NOTE: Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. ~OR~
Education: Successful completion of two (2) full years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. (Transcripts required at time of application) ~OR~
Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience, as described above, which meet total qualification requirements at the GS-4 grade level. (Transcripts required at time of application)

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work is performed throughout the Medical Center and includes extensive walking, standing, bending, carrying of light items such as papers, books, etc., and pushing visitors in wheelchairs No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Work is performed throughout the Medical Center in adequate, lighted, and climate-controlled areas and may also require assistance from visitors located outdoors for short periods of time.
