Employee will be assigned to Patient Care Services (PCS), Procedural Medicine Service, VA Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN, serving as a Medical Technician providing point-of care testing, venous puncture, urine drug screens, and must be familiar with basic laboratory operations. In addition to performing phlebotomy, the employee will be assigned to various duties according to the needs of the service.
Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Performs routine venipuncture specimen collections from inpatients and outpatients 24 hours a day.
Collects blood samples with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or repeat venous puncture, and ensures that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay.
Verifies patient identification, performs proper sample procurement, and performs specimen labeling prior to acceptance into the laboratory.
Follows the laboratory procedures for collecting specimens in the appropriate container, maintains specimen under appropriate conditions, and follows guidelines for collecting timed specimens at the appropriate times to insure specimen viability.
Evaluates the suitability of each specimen for analysis, requesting a new specimen if determined to be unusable.
Has responsibility for the sterile collection and dispersal of physician requested patient clean catch urinalysis specimens, urine cultures, and 24-hr urine collections.
Provides education to patients for proper collection techniques of urine, stool, or other fluid collections.
Provides training to Medical Laboratory Technicians, Medical Technologists, Medical Technology students, nursing staff, and residents for phlebotomy skills.
Accessions tests into the laboratory computer system and ensures all applicable orders are utilized.
Prepares samples for testing in the various clinical laboratory sections, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc.
Receives requests for testing and specimens into the laboratory and verifies the accuracy and completeness of the request.
Performs a limited amount of patient testing which includes glucose testing and employee urine drug screening.
Performs administrative tasks to support workflow of the electronic medical records team and laboratory staff.
Answers telephone calls, and coordinates information and actions relating to patient care and services.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Multiple shifts available to include weekend and holiday rotation.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: experience that may have been gained in (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position being filled. At this level, specialized experience should include experience performing a variety of laboratory tests, examinations, phlebotomy, specimen collection, processing, accessioning, and testing.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects appropriate to the position being filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school.

Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements for the GS-5.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion with considerable walking and long periods of standing. It requires frequent bending and occasional moving of heavy supplies (40 pounds or more). The work environment is a fast-paced area with a high degree of multitasking.
