The incumbent is an internationally recognized technologist in the field of hypersonics, conducting innovative research to develop knowledge and necessary supporting technologies. The technical problems in this field are exceptionally difficult and unyielding to immediate investigation and solution; and require new, unconventional, or novel approaches for complex research techniques.

Duties

The Senior Technologist for Hypersonic Propulsion: Leads and participates in research and technology activities focused on hypersonic aerodynamics and air-breathing propulsion across a broad range of technologies, including associated technologies such as turbulent mixing in supersonic combustors, hypersonic inlet and exhaust systems, variable-mode combined cycle engines, and advanced concepts for augmentation of flight vehicle performance. Interfaces with experts within the hypersonics aerodynamics and air-breathing propulsion community, and complementary fields, to identify research of mutual benefit. Publishes results of his/her work, gives invited lectures at national and international forums, and serves as a mentor and resource to other researchers in the field and participates on agency and national level committees. Serves as the Center's expert in hypersonics aerodynamics, propulsion and associated technologies and reports to the Chief, Propulsion Division. Has a lead role in developing new, innovative research and technology activities. Serves as advisor/consultant with the Chief, Propulsion and/or Director, Research and Engineering, Center's senior managers, NASA Headquarters, and project managers in the aeronautics and space program offices on matters pertaining to hypersonics and conducting research to develop necessary supporting technologies. Advises Chief, Propulsion and Director, Research and Engineering on hypersonic aerodynamics and propulsion research activities in industry, academia, and other government laboratories. Assists with Center efforts in evaluating and prioritizing technologies for future investment; and consults with other NASA organizations in the development of necessary supporting technologies. Provides broad advisory and consultative service to other government agencies seeking incumbent's expertise and decisive problem-solving capabilities. Provides technical leadership and serves as mentor to junior engineers; and facilitates knowledge sharing within and between programs, projects, and organizations. Fosters and continually drives a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation within and outside of the organization and NASA. Requirements

  • The individual selected will be required to file an 'Executive Branch Personnel Financial Disclosure Report' (OGE-278) in accordance with the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation commensurate with the risk and sensitivity level of the position.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment and random drug screening may be required.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess expert knowledge and at least 3 years of directly related specialized experience in research and technology activities focused on high-speed aerodynamics including hypersonics and air-breathing propulsion across a broad range of technologies, including associated technologies such as turbulent mixing in supersonic combustors, hypersonic inlet and exhaust systems, variable-mode combined cycle engines, and advanced concepts for augmentation of flight vehicle performance. At least 1 year of this experience must have been in planning and executing difficult programs of national significance or planning and executing specialized programs that show outstanding attainments in the field of research or consultation. At least 1 year of the directly related specialized experience must be at least equivalent to experience at the GS-15 level.
