This position is located within the Environmental Management Services Division, under direct supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor, at G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center.
DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (5 CFR 337.201) for this occupation.
Duties
As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform the following duties:
Use proper cleaning solutions and/or chemicals to successfully remove stains from a variety of surfaces (floors, carpet, tile, walls, etc.)
Apply appropriate cleaning solutions to various types of floors (linoleum, wood, or marble), walls, and ceilings to clean and maintain such surfaces.
Clean and sanitize restrooms: urinals, commode, sink, mirror, etc.
Clean patients' rooms using sanitizing chemicals that will not compromise patients' health to disinfect surfaces.
Remove soiled linen from ward areas or clinics using the proper collection methods for handling possible contaminated items.
Keep a stock of cleaning materials and equipment needed to do your work.
Follow instructions to a variety of special cleaning and sanitizing solutions to remove different kinds of stains from a variety of surfaces.
Follow simple written instructions for completing non-routine cleaning tasks.
Read and follow posted instructions through signs and pictures.
Operate, adjust, and clean heavy power cleaning equipment.
Use common cleaning tools and lightweight cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, and floor scrubbers.
Adjust, clean, and perform minor maintenance on equipment and change attachments for proper use.
Adhere to safety policies and procedures when performing manual work.
Work quickly without accidents while at the same time being attentive to the quality of your work.
Use proper lifting techniques when lifting objects especially those that may be bulky and/or awkward.
Work Schedule: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Weekends Only, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Requirements: This position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, eye coordination and concentration, as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust, and debris.
