The incumbent/s will function as a Painter, within Engineering Service for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS).
Duties
The Painter serves in the fully-skilled technical capacity. The Painter will apply prime coats and surface prep materials and chemicals in order for surfaces to receive proper finished coats, which may include one to three applications or more.
The Painter will paint parking lot striping, parking spots, fire lanes, crosswalks, fire hydrants, fire suppression piping, way finding signage, outdoor railings, concrete curbing, steps, and other various surfaces that are beyond basic commercial surface painting and require special applications and processes.
The Painter will repair and patch surfaces where holes, cracks, rips, damage have occurred.
The Painter will work overhead, in crawlspaces, on the ground, under structures, on ladders, on rooftops, etc. The Painter will set up scaffolding, ladders, harnesses, etc. for work involved with hard-to-reach areas.
The Painter will prepare coatings and preparation materials by tinting, toning, blending, mixing, etc. in order to ensure proper blend of mixture for intended application.
The Painter will protect areas from paint overspray by use of tape, plastic, cloths, etc. the Painter will set up and ensure areas are properly ventilated through the initiation and use of negative air machines and Infection Control Risk Assessments and Permits.
The Painter will utilize spray booths, and wear appropriate respirators and PPE in performance of duties.
The Painter will use all types of paints and solvents including oil-based, latex, and bio-based paints, along with chemical and petroleum-based solvents, cleaners, and solutions.
The Painter will track and report usage of all chemicals, wastes, paints, solvents, etc. for the healthcare system's chemical inventory program.
Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday thru Friday

Physical Requirements: The Painter must be able to lift and carry weight exceeding 100 pounds on a daily basis. Materials include stone, sand, concrete, bricks, mortar, wheel barrows, ladders, tools, raw steel, pipes, wood, windows, doors, wood, beams, etc. The majority of the work will be while standing, stooping, bending, crawling, and/or climbing.
Working Conditions: The Painter will work in various indoor and outdoor environments which include exposures to temperature and weather extremes; elevated work areas (rooftops) while on ladders and/or lifts; tunnels; hazardous materials (asbestos and lead); loud noises, hazardous environments; hard hat areas; dust and dirt; oils, solvents, building products, and chemicals. Protective Personal Equipment (Respirators, Hearing Protection, Eye Protection, Protective clothing and boots, Harnesses, Monitoring devices for confined spaces, etc.) will be required daily in the completion of duties.
