These positions will be in a Primary Care, Nursing facility at the Atlanta VA Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia or surrounding areas. The incumbent serves as a phlebotomist and is responsible for collecting a broad range of routine and emergency blood samples. The incumbent may perform phlebotomy or testing on inpatients, outpatients, surgical patients, CBOC patients, ED patients or wherever the need arises.
Duties

Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture) and urine specimen collection on patients.
Performs therapeutic blood collection which is equivalent to 500 ml of blood collected on patients with various blood disorders.
Assists in training other personnel in proper phlebotomy and specimen collection techniques.
Receives and processes a variety of laboratory specimens using processing methods (centrifugation, splitting specimens into aliquots, and separation of components) in accordance with established laboratory policies and procedures.
Performs glucose tolerance testing by administering pretest substances, drawing blood at specific time intervals, and testing for Fasting Blood Sugar levels with the authorized blood gas instrument located in the Chemistry department.
Understanding of the basic medical implications of the tests and be able to explain the purpose and procedure for tests to the patient.
Assist in disinfecting and closing the Phlebotomy Room at the end of the shift.
Performs other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm and 8:00am - 4:30pm needs to support the location

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Work is performed in a well-ventilated laboratory or office area. There is a risk of exposure to infectious diseases. Employee may be required to use protective clothing such as masks, gowns, gloves, boots, etc.

EXPERIENCE: GS 4 Possess at least (6) months of general experience and (6) months of specialized experience which equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the Medical Technician, GS-4. General Experience is: (1) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of specialized experience include: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. ~OR~
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Possess the successfully completion of (a) an associate - degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the two (2) year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) one (1) year of study that included six (6) semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of a full-time training course of approximately a year's duration in a medical or clinical laboratory assistant (or technician) school that included instruction in chemistry, hematology, blood banking, and microbiology (including serology) and that, in addition, included supervised laboratory practice incident to the diagnostic process and the treatment of patients; or (c) two (2) years of study that included at least twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college, or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. ~OR~
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Possess the equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education and specialized experience, as described above, may be used to meet total qualification requirements at the GS-04 level. If education is used to meet specialized experience requirements, then such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position and must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application.
GS 5: One (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Medical Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-4 grade level in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. Additional specialized experience includes experience to recognize and properly process specimens using equipment and supplies in a variety of diagnostic procedures for the purpose of carrying out specimen collection, processing or testing. Skills in drawing blood for a variety of tests, from a variety of sites, using a variety of methods. Ensuring that the correct samples are collected in a proper manner and container to ensure that quality specimens are obtained. Physical Requirements: Work requires extended periods of staying in one position, sitting, or standing, some light (less than 40 pounds) lifting, and attention to detail and concentration when verifying patient identification and test request data, and when accessioning and labeling specimens. This may be intermittent with periods requiring physical activity such as walking moderate distances.
