Duties
This position is located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. The Housekeeping Aid is known as Environmental Services Technician, in the Environmental Management Division. The primary purpose of this position is to provide a health healing environment. The ES Tech performs assigned duties in a variety of inpatient and outpatient care areas, and non-patient care areas including research, clinical laboratories, administration areas, etc. The ES Tech receives daily assignments from his/her supervisor, work leader, or other EMS staff member designated as in-charge. The ES Tech will be assigned to one of a number of varying shifts.
Duties:
Works with a team or singularly depending on the task.
Plans daily schedule in order to accomplish routine cleaning, which may include cleaning patient care and/or administration areas.
Cleans walls, doors, door frames, floors, windows, blinds, beds/bed frames, fixtures and furniture, door knobs, light switches, and other non-critical reusable medical equipment (i.e., wheel chairs, gurneys, IV poles).
Cleans porcelain and chrome fixtures in bath and shower rooms.
Empties all waste and trash receptacles including regulated medical waste, chemotherapy, pathological waste, hazardous waste, etc.
Operates a variety of powered equipment such as vacuum cleaners, rug shampoo machines, baseboard scrubbers, and wall cleaning machines.
Scrubs, strips, and applies floor sealers and finishes using powered buffers and scrubbers.
Moves furniture and equipment when required.
Submits verbal work order requests to the supervisor in the event that there is a need for maintenance or repair of building and equipment.
Attends staff meetings, participates in ongoing in-services and training and adheres to prescribed operational procedures.
Provides coverage in assigned areas as needed, including operating rooms, surgical and intensive care areas, and the Sterile Processing Services area.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: The Housekeeping Aid must be able to lift various items up to 50 lbs. Items include, but are not limited to: heavy trash, furniture, appliances, clean linen, soiled linen, contaminated/ infectious/ biohazard waste, chemotherapy, as well as other materials that they may come in contact with. Additionally, they may be required to lift heavy containers such as stripper/finish and other supplies in large, heavy containers. They must be able to apply and demonstrate proper lifting techniques and body mechanics to safely handle/dispose of these materials. They must also be able to apply and demonstrate safe handling of spills of these and any other hazardous waste materials that they may come in contact with. Eye acuity to identify soiled items is required. Must push, pull, load and unload carts, bend, stoop, twist and turn with moderate effort, climb ladders to change cubical curtains, clean out light fixtures and clean windows and other high surfaces. Must be able to negotiate small spaces to clean.
Working Conditions: The Housekeeping Aid regularly moves between contaminated/dirty environments to clean environments. They often work in the presence of blood, body fluids and excretions, some of which may be foul smelling. Strong odors may be present while using cleaning chemicals. There are potential hazards associated with Environmental Service work such as cleaning chemical splash hazards, cuts, needle sticks, bumps and bruises, etc., if proper precautions are not met. The work area can be noisy due to the rumbling of carts and operation of equipment

Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties.
