This position is in Supply Chain Management Service (SCMS) in a Veteran Affairs Maryland Health Care System (VA MHCS) and supported catchment area. The primary purpose of this position is transporting supplies and equipment from the main warehouse to various locations at an assigned Veterans Administration medical facility and any additional location, i.e., Outpatient Clinic (s), National Cemetery, and VA Regional office, as needed.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Position operates vehicles such as shuttle carts/golf carts, vans, pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, and sports utility vehicles which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms (10,000 pounds). The position's duties include cargo loading and unloading from vehicles to provide timely delivery of supplies and equipment directly to users or to storage areas; completes documentation to record activities. Secures cargo to prevent damage to contents during transport and ensures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the maximum capacity. Loads and unloads by hand but may use a handcart to transport items. Protects materials, supplies and equipment from the elements. Vehicle transport includes medical and office supplies, equipment, and mail over Federal, State and Country roads in all traffic conditions, on specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules. Position performs routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure. Maintains cleanliness and professional appearance of both the in and outside of the vehicle. Completes all maintenance service records to document activities. Duties may include providing courtesy rides to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the VAMC campus. Duties may also involve assisting in areas like the warehouse to receive, store, and move materials and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: While operating motor vehicles, the position exerts light physical efforts in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. May need to exert effort to make emergency repairs, such as changing a flat tire. Frequently, bends, lifts and carries equipment, supplies or materials up to 40 pounds. In addition to the physical demand described, moderate physical effort may be required in making couplings between the vehicle and towed equipment because safety chains, towbars, and hooks must be lifted and properly secured. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.
