About the Position: This is a Sewing Machine Operator, WG-3111-04, Position with the U.S. Military Academy, Located at West Point, NY.
Duties
Use specialized sewing machines to create buttonhole, eyelet, bar tack, over edge, cylinder and chain stitch.
On a required basis, other duties may be occasionally performed such as hand sewing, alterations or repairs.
Identify completed garments according to size and lot and apply bar coding tickets.
Fold, bundle, or box completed garments.
Operate a standard high-speed industrial sewing machine.
Work with different types of fabrics and/or clothing materials.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has a requirement to lift items weighing up to 40 pounds in the regular performance of duties.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Sewing Maching Operator~ without more than normal supervision. 1). Operation of high-speed industrial sewing machines in the manufacture of items; 2). Align and position materials to perform straight or curved edge stitching; 3). Operate machines used for lock stitching, bar tacking, zigzag stitching, and button sewing; 4). Perform hand sewing. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Sits and/or stands for long periods of time with continued movement of hands, arms and fingers in placing items in position for sewing, ticketing or pressing. Handles pieces of fabric or articles of clothing that are relatively heavy and bulky.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Shop is adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Operators are subject to cuts, punctures, scratches, burns and other minor irritations and injuries from handling sharp tools and pressing equipment. Subject to allergies from dyes, dust, and lint from fabrics. Also, operators are subject to noise from sewing machines.
