Area Information: Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site is in Affton, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis in St. Louis County. The National Park Service interprets the life of Ulysses S. Grant, the victorious Civil War general who saved the Union and served as the 18th President of the United States, his family, and enslaved African-American residents of his St. Louis home, White Haven. He first met Julia Dent, his future wife, at White Haven, her family home, in 1844. Grant lived and worked on the property from 1854 to 1859, and Grant's association with the home lasted for over 40 years until just prior to his death in 1885. With a remarkably low cost of living for all the comforts and attractions it affords, St. Louis has a small-town feel, yet offers all the amenities you'd expect in a major metropolitan area, including top-notch health care, education, professional sports, and a multitude of cultural attractions. The City of St. Louis is relatively small, but the surrounding metropolitan area with nearly three million residents in both Missouri and Illinois offers many suburban and rural counties for easy commutes.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April to October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: 4/21/2024
