What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?
This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year that may be extended for 1 additional year without further competition.
Salary: $159,806 (Step 01) to $191,900 (Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
Duties
As a Research Geologist (Earth MRI Senior Advisor) within the Associate Director for Energy & Minerals some of your specific duties will include:
Qualifications
BASIC EXPERIENCE: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.
OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-15: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-15 level:
One year of appropriate professional experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include
(1) extensive professional knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of geology, including authoritative knowledge of economic geology and mineral resource assessment methodologies in order to plan and implement a coherent national-scale data acquisition and analysis program to support mineral resource assessment for multiple commodities and interpret the results.
(2)The applicant is a researcher with outstanding achievements and international recognition whose expertise is sought out in one or more fields of: geologic mapping, structural geology, tectonism, development of mineral occurrence models, and identification of environmental impacts related to resource development, as demonstrated by the successful execution and completion of complex research in these fields.
(3) Applicants work has resulted in publications that are considered definitive in solution of important geologic problems and are of considerable interest to the scientific community.
(4) The applicant has demonstrated leadership in project management, definition and execution of research goals, and securing funding and has applied scientific and communication skills in setting goals and coordinating research in collaboration with USGS, State Geological Surveys, and other Federal Agency activities to support the broad National goals of the USGS.
