About the Position: Fort Drum, the home of the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), is located in Northern New York, a historically unique and geographically beautiful area, offering bountiful outdoor recreational opportunities from hunting and fishing to winter sports of all types.
Duties
Serves as the staff specialist with responsibility for the development, planning, and application of the Fort Drum Forest Management Program.
Maintains liaison with employees of Federal and State governments, local officials, and private organizations or landowners who are affected by, or otherwise have a shared interest in, the forest management practices and problems in the forest area.
Plans, coordinates, and administers the technical phases of forest area planting and seeding programs, including the inventory of areas suitable for reforestation.
Plans, coordinates, and conducts training sessions on silvicultural principles and practices.

Basic Requirement for Forester:
A bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in forestry; or a related subject-matter field that included a total of at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours of course work was in forestry. My curriculum was sufficiently diversified and included courses in each of the following areas: (1) Management of Renewable Resources -- study of the science and art of managing renewable resources to attain desired results; (2) Forest Biology -- study of the classification, distribution, characteristics, and identification of forest vegetation, and the interrelationships of living organisms to the forest environment; and (3) Forest Resource Measurements and Inventory -- sampling, inventory, measurement, and analysis techniques as applied to a variety of forest resources. A combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major in forestry, or at least 30 semester hours in any combination of biological, physical, or mathematical sciences or engineering, of which at least 24 semester hours were in forestry. My curriculum was sufficiently diversified and included courses in each of the areas described in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which inclu1) assisting with forest programs such as: forest management, timber sale, and timber improvement; 2.) examining areas of the forest and determine cultural treatments; 3) and assisting with silvicultural practices such as: planting and seeding procedures, ground and seedbed, and control of animals and insects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position such as: Forestry, Silviculture, or Forest Management. OR
Combination of Education and Specialized Experience:
The specialized experience as described in A, but less than one year; and I have at least two years of graduate education as described in B, but less than the required three years. I have computed the percentage of the requirements that I meet, and the total is at least 100% (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then, divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
