THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION. This National Guard position is for a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (TITLE 32), Position Description Number D0416000 and is part of the IL AASF 2, National Guard.

Duties

As a SHEET METAL MECHANIC (AIRCRAFT) (TITLE 32), WG-3806-5/8/10, you will perform sheet metal maintenance on aircraft and components. Major Duties - This is NOT an all-inclusive list: Repair cracks in aircraft skin. Fabricate and fit patches to damaged areas as necessary to retain or restore original strength. Install regular, heat-treated, high shear, and blind type aircraft rivets and fasteners by using pneumatic riveters, bucking bars and other special tools. Remove, fabricate, repair, modify, and install parts and assemblies, such as frames, stringers, longerons, bulkheads, beams, ribs, spars, skin, cowling, brackets, fairing, stressed and double contour skins using hand or powered tools and a variety of metal working equipment. Inspect and troubleshoot aircraft structures such as fuselage, tail, wings, cowlings and stabilizers. Fit and trim components to aircraft such as loading gear doors, ailerons, flaps, engine access doors and similar assemblies. Devise and calculate patterns employing the principles of triangulation, radial, and parallel line development. Align component structures and airframe using precision optical measuring instruments, plumline and level. Perform metal to metal bonding where delamination of surfaces or core material occurs. Inspect for corrosion conditions which are eliminated by chemical treatment or material replacement. Inspect, repair, fabricate and replace honeycomb and fiberglass structural assemblies. Set up, operate and maintain power shears, metal brakes, rolls, dimpling machines, drills, saws, heat-treating furnaces, hardness testers, arc and oxyacetalene welders and other metal working equipment and tools of the trade. Prepare and design layout, dies, jigs, and templates necessary to carry out fabrication, repair or modification of aircraft, general support equipment and facility support equipment.

Requirements

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.

Qualifications

AREA OF CONSIDERATION: The areas of consideration for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code § 709), will be in the following manner and sequence: The FIRST area of consideration for this position will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG. The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees. The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible. The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership. The FIFTH area of consideration will U.S. Citizens. Military Grades: Enlisted Only - May not exceed the rank of SSG. GENERAL EXPERIENCE: MUST possess experience or training that has provided the ability to plan, manufacture, and install cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastenings such as single and double-hem edges and single, double or grooved seams. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: WG-10 Level MUST possess at least 18 months experience or training in planning, layout, and construction skills to manufacture items and systems with dovetailed seams, set-in-bottom seams, burred-bottom seams, or wired or lock seams; experience using more complicated shop tools and equipment; experience in using metals including stainless steel, copper sheet, magnesium, honeycomb material and alloys; experience demonstrating the use of more complicated mathematical calculations and complicated measuring instruments. WG-08 Level MUST possess at least 12 months experience or training planning, manufacturing, and installing cylindrical, square, or rectangular-shaped objects that have easily constructed fastening; experience cutting and forming by using basic hand and powered tools such as hammers, chisels, hand snips, band and circle saws, squaring shears, seamers, bar folders, breaks, and stakes; experience assembling parts by seaming, bolting, screwing, riveting, tacking, spot-welding, or soldering; experience demonstrating a basic understanding of using measuring instruments. WG-05 Level MUST possess at least 6 months experience or training which demonstrates the ability to use common hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments and make repetitive repairs; basic knowledge of the type of work performed by the occupational series; provide assistance to the journeyman by performing the simpler and routine duties of the trade. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
