NIH Recent Graduates perform duties in one of the Institutes or Centers in the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH Recent Graduates receive on-the-job training for one year and complete at least 40 hours of formal interactive training while in the program. Assignments are aimed at developing the employee's skills and knowledge to progressively perform more difficult duties. This position will perform duties that support scientific research and administrative activities within NHGRI.

Duties

Performs scientific analysis and advisory assignments related to the effectiveness of extramural research programs. Performs limited scientific program analysis assignments. Assists staff regarding planning, organizing, and attending internal and external meetings; including coordination of necessary documentation and approvals. Assists with preparing technical reports, analyzing data from the studies, and publication of research findings. Reviews and assists with tracking recurring requirements and progress toward fulfilling , written reports pertaining to research progress and performance. Assists in preparing briefings, presentations and other reports in response to various requests.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen prior to conversion to competitive appointment.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification Requirements: To be eligible for appointment, you must be a recent graduate who has completed, within the previous two years, a qualifying associates, bachelors, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree, or certificate from a qualifying, accredited educational institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. A valid certificate program is post-secondary education in a qualifying educational institution that is equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study, as defined by your university. The certificate program must also be a part of an accredited college-level, technical, vocational, trade, or business school curriculum. Additional Qualification Requirements: In order to qualify for a Scientific Program Analyst, GS-0601, position you must have successfully completed a full 4 year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained). AND: To qualify for the Scientific Program Analyst, 0601 at the GS-07 level, you must have: A. Completed 1 full year of graduate level education in a related field; OR B. A bachelor's degree in a health science or allied science field AND meet one of the requirements for superior academic achievement based on: a) graduating within the upper third of the graduating class in college, university, or major subdivision such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR b) having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR c) being elected for membership in a national scholastic honor society; OR C. Demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: participating in the planning, organization, and execution of activities that support scientific research; collaborating with other staff in developing, and performing analyses to maximize the success of goals and objectives, planning of internal and external meetings, workshops, and symposiums; assisting with identifying areas for improvement in existing systems; OR D. A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. To qualify for the Scientific Program Analyst, 0601 at the GS-09 level, you must have: A. Completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or, have a master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field; OR B. Demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assisting in the planning, organization, and execution of activities that support scientific research activities; collaborating with staff in planning, developing, and performing analyses to maximize the success of goals and objectives; coordinating and organizing meetings, workshops, and symposiums; identifying areas for improvement in existing systems and leading efforts to implement those improvements; OR C. A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
