The Clinical Educator is responsible for the development and coordination of a comprehensive interdisciplinary education plan for clinical and non-clinical personnel in order to assure ongoing competency as well as workforce adaption to changing knowledge and technology.
Duties
The Clinical Educator is accountable for multiple facets of education, training, and professional organizational development with the larger strategy of promoting a learning culture across the system. The Clinical Educator is responsible for the development and coordination of a comprehensive interdisciplinary education plan for clinical and non-clinical personnel in order to assure ongoing competency as well as workforce adaption to changing knowledge and technology. This individual will assess, plan, design, implement, coordinate, and evaluate a diverse range of educational offerings to the facility workforce. Examples of specific tasks may include Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support (ACLS)/Basic Life Support {BLS) oversight, simulation management, consultation of competency training and documentation, coordination of VHA educational clinical programming, and implementation of computer- based clinical programming. This individual will foster both formal and informal methods of staff learning.
Duties Include But Not Limited To:
1. The nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimal care (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses).
2. Provides a full range of nursing care to patients with complex care needs utilizing the nursing process based on the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice.
2.1. Demonstrates consistent clinical competence in providing nursing care.
2.1.1. Uses equipment correctly and accurately interprets data.
2.1.2. Recognizes subtle changes in patient's condition and responds timely, choosing the correct interventions.
2.1.3. Demonstrates evidence of critical thinking skills in identifying, analyzing, and resolving patient care problems on the unit.
2.2. Initiates and implements an interdisciplinary plan of care based on assessments.
2.2.1. Performs ongoing assessment of patient condition and response to treatment.
2.2.2. Provides leadership in establishing goals, evaluating the plan of care, and in discharge planning.
2.2.3. Initiates referrals to other disciplines and/or services as appropriate.
2.2.4. Assesses the patient's learning needs, learning preference, and readiness to learn. Modifies teaching approach based on knowledge of human behavior, motivations, and reactions to situations.
3. Accurately documents in the medical record patient findings, assessments, and care provided.
3.1. Documentation is technically informative, complete, accurate, consistent, concise, and timely.
3.2. Evaluates and documents patient response to interventions and progress towards attainment of goals and expected outcomes.
3.3. Revises interdisciplinary plan of care based upon on-going patient assessment and evaluation.
3.4. Uses the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and the Bar-Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) software per policy.
4. Uses a team approach to identify, analyze, and resolve patient care problems that result in improved patient outcomes.
5. Position-specific Competency Checklist is completed annually and includes direct patient care skills and is rated competent in all measured areas.
6. Assesses the learning needs of others and plans/organizes educational activities and goals.
7. Develops written plans for educational programs in compliance with accrediting agency policies and procedures.
8. Implements plans utilizing adult learning principles.
9. Evaluates educational outcomes and develops a plan for follow-up education as indicated.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: MSN-Education, ACLS and Elsevier Admin experience
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); Heavy carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight pulling and pushing; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking and standing up to 8 hours; repeated bending; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; hearing aid permitted.
