The Incumbent will serve as an Advanced Practice Level Dietitian - Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) and is the medical nutrition expert responsible for independently planning, developing and directing all nutritional care activities for assigned clients, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs. He/she supports the facility's mission and coordinates nutritional care with other health care providers, the client, the client's family and the community.
Duties
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Planning, developing, and directing all nutritional care activities for assigned Veterans, including those with complex medical and nutritional needs
Supporting the facility's mission and coordinating nutritional care with other health care providers, the Veteran, the Veteran's caregiver, and the community requiring expertise in a wide range of disease entities and treatment modalities
Diagnosing nutrition problems and the nutrition ramifications of disease entities and medical treatment modalities
Using assessment methodologies such as identifying physical signs of malnutrition, drug/nutrient interactions and depletions, and assessment of intake and nutrient losses
Performing other related duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or Registered Dietitian (RD) - Must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
Non-credentialed Dietitians must have fulfilled each of the following:
Earned a bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent. Foreign Education: To be creditable, college and/or university degrees earned outside the U.S and its territories must be evaluated by ACEND and meet ACEND's International Dietitian Education standards which are designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and competencies to sit for the CDR credentialing exam. ~AND~
Completed an ACEND accredited experiential or supervised practice program and provide a verification statement from the program director that conveys eligibility to take the CDR registration exam as a prospective RDN. A list of ACEND accredited programs are located on the ACEND website or at ACEND Accredited Programs Directory.
Current VHA Dietitians that qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision may not be promoted to a higher grade if they do not meet the current RDN/RD requirements.
Grade Determinations: GS-12 Dietitian, Advanced Level Practice, applicants must possess the following experience, assignment history, and each of the Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA's).
Preferred Experience: Previous experience preferred within Eastern Kansas CLC.
Credentials. Advanced level practice dietitians must possess a minimum of one advanced practice credential relevant to the area of practice, (e.g., Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC), Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR), Board Certified Specialist in Gerontological Nutrition (CSG), Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) or Board-Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO)).
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*Ability to develop, maintain, and supervise a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies to assure compliance with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities.
*Knowledge of the principles of program management and oversight required to develop program goals and objectives, administer and monitor program, evaluate program outcomes/accomplishments, set and redefine priorities, and implement effective solutions in processes/systems as needed.
Ability to act as a consultant for staff.
Ability to mentor and educate peers and other multidisciplinary team members in complex issues, procedures and practices.
Ability to make presentations on topics regarding food, nutrition and health issues.
Ability to make high level decisions with a focus on delivering patient care and achieving program outcomes.
* Ability to contribute to evidence analysis process to affect practice and identify and create new practice opportunities.

Physical Requirements:
1. Requires intermittent walking and standing for up to 50% of the tour and driving to Veteran's homes in rural areas.
2. Moderate lifting 15-44 lbs. and moderate carrying 15-44 lbs. is routinely done.
3. Intermittent daily use of computer, electronic medical record and video equipment requires rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
