This is a Pathways Student Trainee position in the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General (DoD OIG), Office of the General Counsel (OGC). As a paid intern, you will be given the opportunity to obtain valuable job experience and will have the opportunity to perform a variety of assignments with substantial opportunities to enhance research and legal writing skills and learn about the professional role/duties of an attorney within a federal agency in partnership with members from OGC.

Duties

Drafts and comments on (1) proposed legislation/regulations, (2) congressional testimony, (3) litigation materials, and (4) legal opinions, as well as assists in the process of formulating OGC legal policy on topics of current interest. Assists with aspects of research projects and reports spanning several weeks’ time that may include documenting findings and proposing preferred or alternative courses of action. Conducts background research on various topics; legal research and opinion writing; and gathers legislative histories and surveys of Congressional testimony on a particular topic. Synthesizes basic research and analytical techniques, and employs verbal and writing skills as appropriate for each assignment. Prepares draft briefing papers, position papers, and replies to Congressional inquiries.

Requirements

  • This position is located in Alexandria, VA, and is not a remote position. Selectee(s) will be required to reside in the Alexandria, VA commuting area prior to appointment.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Position has been designated as Secret Security designation level such as Noncritical Sensitive. Incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service (see http://www.sss.gov).
  • Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time or half-time student.
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Students must also be attending an American Bar Association Accredited Law School. Prior graduates and students graduating in the Spring of 2024 are not eligible. Must maintain student eligibility for the duration of internship.
  • Incumbent is required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and is subject to random drug testing for the duration of service with DoD OIG.
  • The incumbent must adhere to the DoD Standards of Conduct.
  • This is a temporary position NTE 1 year.

Qualifications

Eligible applicants will be: Enrolled in a law school pursuing a Juris Doctor Degree or a LL.B Legum Baccalaureus Degree on a full-time or half-time (Half-time basis is defined by the academic institution that the student is enrolled or accepted into) student into an accredited college or university in a qualifying degree-seeking program. Students must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) at time of application and must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA throughout the entire Pathways Student Trainee Internship appointment to remain in the Program; Applicants MUST submit a transcript or proof of enrollment with the online application (see Required Documents for additional details). Please Note: If you are graduating from your current academic program prior to September 2024 you will not be eligible for this student appointment unless you are accepted for enrollment at a qualifying educational institution seeking an ADDITIONAL qualifying degree, diploma, certificate, etc., OR an advanced degree. You MUST submit proof of acceptance along with your current transcripts for consideration. If selected, you must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement; be able to furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and be able to provide verification of academic status (official transcript) at the end of each academic term. In addition to meeting the eligibility requirements for the position, the following qualifications are required: Completion of two years of enrollment at an American Bar Association accredited university is required. You will be rated INELIGIBLE if you do not possess both eligibility and qualification requirements for this position.
