This position is located within Facilities Management at the Canandaigua VAMC and is assigned to the Building Unit of the Engineering Service. The work of the position involves constructing, altering, maintaining, and repairing buildings, structures, partitions, panels, tool cabinets, bookcases, work benches, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies wood, wood substitutes (i.e., plastics) building components such as rafters, walls, staircases, doors, windows and frames, ceilings, trim work, roofs and floors, furniture/cabinets, and countertops Building forms for concrete, wood and metal framing, sheet-rocking, floors, roofs, erection of partitions, exterior and interior trim, hanging doors and installation of hardware. He/she assembles, repairs and modifies modular office furniture such as closets, desks, tables, display cases, shelves and partitions. Required to maintain and install acoustical ceiling, both suspended metal and adhesive type. He/she maintains and repairs asphalt, rubber and vinyl tile floors; installs new floors as needed. Repairs and maintains roofs of slate, rubber, and asphalt shingle. Install cylinder, bit and combination type locks on metal and wood doors, along with all associated hardware to include hinges, closers and panic bars. Operates and uses a wide variety of specialty woodworking machines and tools to include shapers, table saws, circular saws, band saws, planers, routers, joiners, nail guns, power activated guns, hand tools and other shop equipment for the purpose of dimensioning lumber and maintenance and repair activities. Plans, measures and lay out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques. Incumbent performs other related and miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisor. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7a - 4:30p Compressed/Flexible Schedule: May be available Critical Skills Incentive : This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive through 10/08/2024. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI. Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter/PD07788A Physical Requirements: Work is performed in wood shops and at job sites. When working in a shop, the employee stands for extended periods of time while operating machinery. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials. The employee may lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds. The employee occasionally lifts and moves heavier items. Working Conditions :Some work is performed in shop areas where the employee is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, flue fumes and other hazards associated with woodworking. The employee is subject to cuts, bruises and contusions. The employee may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on or around ladders and scaffolds. The employee may work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics which may be dusty and dirty. The employee uses protective clothing and devices.
