You will serve as a AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Duties

You will investigate, troubleshoot and repair highly complex pneumatic, hydraulic, and air handling systems. You will investigate, troubleshoot and repair central environmental monitoring and control systems for heating and cooling, refrigeration, humidifying and dehumidifying various types of buildings and facilities. You will install and fit connection rods, crank shafts, piston rings, bearings, and bushings to repair equipment. You will install and repair piping and duct work (e.g., grills, dampers) to maintain equipment. You will replace gaskets, valve fittings, seals, and diaphragms to overhaul valves. You will work on compressor refrigerant controls, i.e., high and low pressure side floats, automatic thermostatic expansion valves, capillary or choke types, and those based on volume or quantity changes. You will troubleshoot and repair motor controls including hermetically sealed motors and pressure controls, thermostatic motor controls (remote and double remote), full and semi-automatic defrosting controls, relays and other controls. You will direct the work of junior employees in the air conditioning equipment mechanic trade. You will instruct air conditioning equipment mechanics, workers, helpers, and student trainees on work procedures to establish safe work practices and good housekeeping. You will monitor air conditioning crew members progress to ensure instructions are being followed and work is accomplished within prescribed time limits. You will review air conditioning work for completion within budget, on time, and within established quality standards.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification OR 40 CFR part 82, Subpart F, Level I and II.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including: 1) installation of new plant equipment, control apparatus, and rebuilding or conversion of units requiring high degree of assembly, cleaning, adjusting, repairing, component replacing and complete overhaul of mechanical and electrical controls used in the above systems of all types of compressors and pumps (reciprocating and centrifugal), gear pumps, motors, vacuum pumps, electrical and pneumatic controllers and recorders.2)Installing, modifying and repairing new and existing refrigeration system components; working from blueprints and sketches to plan and layout the placement of systems and components; performing maintenance, testing and troubleshooting of refrigeration equipment. 3) Completing instructions from supervisors and demonstrating proper work methods.
