About the Position: This position will serve as a Museum Technician (History/Office Automation) at the Fort Liberty Museum, located in North Carolina. The incumbent will be responsible for technical duties in connection with the management of the Museum collection to include maintenance and accountability of the historical properties catalog system. Assists the museum curator with the day to day operation of the museum.

Duties

Receives artifacts acquired by the museum curator. Reviews and verifies invoices, bills of lading, bequests, donor transfers, and other legal artifact acquisition documents. Conduct inventories, maintains documentation records to include input of collection data into a computer (AMIS) in order to maintain control and accountability of the museum collection. Incumbent assists the Curator and Exhibits Specialist in the planning, design and construction of professional museum exhibits. With guidance from the Museum Curator, develops and implements educational programs in the form of interpretive tours for military and civilian audiences at various levels of comprehension, from elementary level to adult level. Maintains Museum conservation laboratory. Performs inventory of supplies. Initiates requests for purchase of supplies and equipment. Performs routine operator maintenance on equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Applicant must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate Security Clearance.
  • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment.
  • This position is subject to an irregular tour of duty including evenings, weekends, and select holidays.
  • Heavy lifting in excess of 45lbs is required (two-person lift); pre-employment physical required.
  • Maintain valid state and government driver’s licenses to fulfill transportation requirement.
  • The incumbent must possess skill in typing and meet the Office of Personnel Management's OPM) proficiency level for typing skill of not less than 40 WPM.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (respirator, gloves etc.) This speaks to protection when identifying immediate conservation or storage issues.
  • This position has an irregular tour of duty and may require shift work and/or work on rotating shifts to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, and in other situations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, and conservation of collections of museum material. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as museum studies history, or other courses related to the position to be filled. You must include official college transcripts with your application. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18.
