This is an intermittent position located at Kayenta Service Unit, Kayenta Health Center (KHC), Division of Clinical Services, Dental Services Branch, in Kayenta, Arizona. The purpose of this position is to serve as a clinical specialist in Endodontics to provide dental service to the designated population in accordance with Indian Health Service policies.
Duties

Provides complex endodontic restoration of teeth having suffered severe and rampant caries, periodontal disease, and trauma to the oral cavity and supporting structures.
Cases may be of a difficult nature, involving patient management of medically and mentally compromised patients, including elders.
Services performed may be with patients susceptible to, or having serious infections, marked drug sensitivities, compromised behavioral responses from emotional, developmental and physical stress, serious systemic or genetic diseases; limited control of physical faculties; higher than average morbidity and mortality rates, unusual oral tissue development and conditions; and degenerative conditions relating to extreme age.
Provides emergency services, including the treatment of trauma, pain and infection of the oral cavity.
Provides diagnostic services, through the use of history, radiographs, examination, diagnostic models, and other appropriate tests.
Provides technical guidance to dentists in the development and operation of direct and contract endodontic programs
Provides continuing dental education through "Challenges Courses" as needed to enable Area dental staff to incorporate endodontic treatment and management procedures which are within the capabilities of general dentists and their staff.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education
Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (external link) (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (external link) (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Licensure
Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (external link) (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (external link) (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Applicants who meet the above basic requirements qualify for the GS-11 grade level.
Experience
In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements, applicants must have one or more full years of experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing professional dentistry work for GS-12 level and above assignments.
GS-13: Qualifying experience involves the evaluation, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, injuries, and disorders of the oral cavity and maxillofacial area. Examples of dentistry experience may include the removal of decay; filling cavities; straightening, extracting, and repairing teeth; treating gum diseases; performing corrective surgery; making measurements/models for dentures to replace missing teeth, administering anesthetics, writing prescriptions; and performing other requirements of the position.

Prosthodontics
Endodontics
Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology
Dental Public Health
For the above specialty areas, experience, education, board certification, and/or training must clearly establish the applicant's status as a specialist
Agencies should review the applicant's experience to determine the types and difficulty of the cases dealt with, the level of knowledge and understanding of the specialization regularly required, the extent of diagnostic skills and treatment planning ability involved, and the pertinent graduate study acquired.
Additional Requirements for the GS-13 (or equivalent) Grade Level.
In addition to the above Basic Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) level, applicants must complete a 3-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; or equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and/or training. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
