The primary purpose of this position is to perform the duties of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified Senior Parachute Rigger. Inspects, repairs, assembles, packs, and certifies for airworthiness non-standard parachute systems. Performs required depot level maintenance on unit specific automatic activation devices.
Duties
- Performs fabrication, inspections, alterations, and repair work on non-standard parachute systems, assemblies, related subcomponents, as well as protective clothing, upholstery, and aerospace related components.
- Performs FAA mandated inspection and recertification of non-standard parachute systems.
- Performs the complete overhaul, repair, and calibration on unit specific automatic parachute activation devices.
- Repacks main parachute canopies in support of the AM-490 Basic Parachute Course.
- Performs documentation and Quality Control Inspections (QCI) tasks. Assists with technician and student training.

- The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position.
- May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours. and/or shift work may be required which may include overtime and/or irregular hours.
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.

- Requires current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Senior or Master Parachute Riggers license. Must show documentation of currency as defined in Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) 65.129.
- Requires current experience with civilian parachute systems.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3100 - Fabric And Leather Work Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the Ability To Do the Work of a FABRIC WORKER (PARACHUTE PACKER) without More than Normal Supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of a variety of common as well as experimental and newly developed fibers, blends, fabrics, including their finishes, and performance and handling characteristics such as dimensional stability, abrasion, and tensile resistance, and heat sensitivity. Knowledge of a wide range of maintenance concepts, principles, techniques, and practices of specific systems/equipment currently in use for modern non-standard parachute systems.
Knowledge of shop mathematics including fractions, equations, and plane measurements. Skill in inspecting, repairing and/or modifying parachute assemblies (i.e. harnesses, containers, and canopies) on a variety of nonstandard parachute systems.
Skill in identifying, analyzing, and interpreting engineering drawings, technical manuals, technical data, and complex technical problems and developing innovative solutions. Skill in inspecting, testing, repairing, and calibrating automatic activation devices.
Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair precise pneumatic/mechanical devices. Ability to interpret instructions and specifications associated with mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic theory, vacuum pumps, and barometric test chambers.
Ability to pack non-standard ram-air type parachutes. Ability to speak in front of an audience, follow established lesson plan and properly utilize instructional material/aids, answer questions, and speak to applicable equipment and procedures.
Ability to critically examine completed or in-process inspection items for deficiencies or technical order discrepancies and convey such information to original technician and supervision. Ability to correctly identify, record, and transfer critical inspection data from equipment to paper and/or electronic records keeping systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing (up to 6-8 hours/day); or recurring activities such as bending, climbing, stooping, crouching, stretching, or reaching; and regularly lifts and moves boxes, bags, and items weighing 50-60 pounds. Requires considerable use of both arms, hands (pulling hand over hand (1.5 or more hours/ day), fingers to use power tools and inspect a variety of AFE. Ability to distinguish shades of color. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Will be required to work in hot, cold, and occasionally inclement environments.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The majority of the work will be performed in a temperature-controlled environment indoors, however, some tasks will required work outside in hot, cold, or occasionally inclement weather, especially when performing duties off-station in temporary training locations. Subject to high noise levels when working around aircraft or powered equipment. Possibility of bruises, punctures, scratches, and other injuries caused by handing sharp tools and materials treated with special finishes, as well as hand wear due to continuous use of hands when packing parachute systems. They may work on ladders. Workers may be exposed to body fluids while cleaning equipment that has been involved in some sort of medical event. The supervisor will provide personal protective equipment.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
